SSDSC2BP480G4 not seen by isdct

I have an SSDSC2BP480G4 and an SSDSC2BB480G4 in the same server. I am trying to create a mirror but am getting an error.

The sector size on the BP480G4 is 512 and the BB480G4 is 4096.

I've ran the isdct and it only shows the BB480G4, nothing shows up for the BP480G4.

This is the output from isdtc show -intelssd:

C:\isdct>isdct show -intelssd

- IntelSSD BTWL404501E5480QGN -

DeviceStatus: Healthy

Firmware: D2010370

FirmwareUpdateAvailable: The selected Intel SSD contains current firmware as of

this tool release.

ModelNumber: INTEL SSDSC2BB480G4

ProductFamily: Intel SSD DC S3500 Series

SerialNumber: BTWL404501E5480QGN

Index: 0

DevicePath: \\\\.\\PHYSICALDRIVE0

Bootloader: Property does not exist.

I need to run the isdtc util on the BP480G4 to change it's sector size to 4096 so I can create this mirror.

I've attached the drive info for both drives.

How can I make the BP480G4 show up so I can use the isdtc util on it?

Thanks in advance.

Hello jg00d3,

The main issue I see from the logs you provided is that one of the drives appears to be a HP OEM version (ModelNumber: VK0480GDJXV, Firmware: 4IWVHPG0). The drive is also an Intel® SSD DC S3500 Series, however, OEM drives often have customizations to work better on specific systems. ISDCT and other Intel tools may not work normally with OEM drives, so we cannot guarantee that you will be able to update the drive's firmware, or to change the Physical sector size.

Make sure you are using Intel® Solid-State Drive Data Center Tool, version 2.3.0: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23931/Intel-Solid-State-Drive-Data-Center-Tool Download Intel® Solid-State Drive Data Center Tool

Here is the link to the Intel® Solid-State Drive Data Center Tool User Guide: https://downloadmirror.intel.com/23931/eng/Intel_SSD_Data_Center_Tool_2_3_x_User_Guide_331961-005.pd... https://downloadmirror.intel.com/23931/eng/Intel_SSD_Data_Center_Tool_2_3_x_User_Guide_331961-005.pd...

You will find instructions to update firmware in page 17 and examples in pages 50-51.

In pages 18-19 you will find information about changing physical sector size. Additionally, you can check the following advisory about this topic: http://www.intel.com/support/ssdc/hpssd/sb/CS-035064.htm Intel® High Performance Solid-State Drive — How to Change Physical Sector Size for Optimal Performance

If you are not able to apply changes to the HP OEM drive, we would advise you to contact HP Support: https://www.hpe.com/us/en/support.html Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Support Help & Customer Service | Hewlett Packard Enterprise United States

Regarding the SATA 3.0 Gbs, the best option is try a different SATA port and cable. In some systems there may be SATA ports limited to 3.0 Gbs, so we advise you to check your computer documentation.

jonathan_intel,

Thanks for the reply.

I tried to change the physicalsectorsize and got this error:

C:\isdct>isdct set -intelssd 1 physicalsectorsize=4096

Error: Write SMART Log command failed.

I am using version 2.3.0:

C:\isdct>isdct version

- Version Information -

Name: Intel(R) Data Center Tool

Version: 2.3.0

Description: Interact and configure Intel SSDs.

I'm checking the pdf you sent and looking at upgrading the firmware on the drive when I do an "isdct show -all -intelssd" it says "FirmwareUpdateAvailable: Please contact your Intel representative about firmware update for this drive."

We tried to order the same exact model number drive but had to find it through amazon since none of the normal channels have this older drive any longer. We ordered from here: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-ssdsc2bb480g4-intel-s3500-bulk/dp/B00J4STBY0 http://www.amazon.com/Intel-ssdsc2bb480g4-intel-s3500-bulk/dp/B00J4STBY0

That page states that the drive is:

  • Model: SSDSC2BB480G4P
  • HP specific firmware

but when we do the isdct it shows ModelNumber: VK0480GDJXV .... What we thought we were purchasing was SSDSC2BB480G4P and what we received was VK0480GDJXV so these are not the same model, is that correct? Are they the same physical drive just different firmware? The isdct says to "contact your intel rep about firmware update for this device" if they are the same physical drive would it be possible to flash this drive w/ the SSDSC2BB480G4P firmware so that we can get the same sector size and complete this mirror?

I've checked on HP's website and there is a firmware update for this drive, http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5390346&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4168 Drivers & Software for HP 480GB 6G SATA Value End ENT Value 3yr Wty VK0480GDJXV Solid State Drive - HP Support Center., but when I try to run it I get this:

The reason we tried to get the same model as the drive we had in the system already was so we didn't have anymore headache w/ this. It appears we've been swindled by the company on amazon that sold us this new drive not the model we expected to receive. If none of the options I've mentioned above are going to work, can you please recommend a current model drive that will have the similar specs as the drive we have currently running in our system and we can purchase that drive and put this issue to rest or (if you work for intel, not sure if you do or not) does intel have refurb stock on this drive that we could purchase or maybe RMA this OEM drive w/? My goal is to just complete this mirror and move on to other items, this has taken far too much of both our time just to create a simple mirror...

Thanks in advance.

Hello jg00d3,

I understand this situation can be confusing, so I would like to clarify a few details about this matter:

- The Intel branded version of the Intel® SSD DC S3500 Series is model SSDSC2BP480G4. The "P" added at the end of the model number, normally means that it is an SSD made (rebranded) for HP, like in the model you purchased: SSDSC2BB480G4P.

- OEM drives may include customizations in hardware as well as firmware depending on the requirements of the OEM. Doing a quick search about this HP model, it seems to be optimized for use with HP Proliant* Servers and other HP Storage systems.

- You can try updating the firmware on the drive with ISDCT. However, in our experience, Intel tools may not be able to update firmware or change the settings of OEM drives since they often require OEM's management tools.

- Since the SSD is not the model you expected, our best advice would be to contact the Place of purchase for assistance about this (exchange, refund, etc.). Intel supports OEM drives once the OEM warranty has expired and if the drive is failing.

You should be able to obtain an Intel® SSD DC S3500 of the same model online, or by contacting a registered Intel® Technology provider: http://locate.intel.com/ Intel® Technology Providers Locator

If you wish to engage a support agent directly, please check the options available at http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contactsupport Contact Support and we will be glad to assist you.
