6GHz not working AX211 Kubuntu 23.04

I have 2 lenovo computers on Kubuntu 23.04 with Intel Wifi6E cards.

With a CA region specific Wifi6E AP :

P360 tiny with AX211 (stock wifi card) - 6GHz is not working

X270 with AX210 - 6GHz is working correctly

Wireless card are detect without issue, and 5GHz is working fine on both.

However the P360 tiny is not able to detect 6GHz, it appears that it is not allowed to use 6GHz.

Reg region is detected correctly as CA.

In contrast the 6GHz works on the X270, and the iw reg get results shows 6GHz usable :

It does appears that AX211 uses different firmware files as compared to the AX210, but those are still up to date :

P360 tiny:~$ll /usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0*

Hello, @Snowy

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities. I will gladly assist you here.

Please, answer these questions to have a better perspective on this issue:

  1. As I understand, the Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX211 is the pre-installed Wi-Fi card in your laptop, is that correct?
  2. Did you make sure that your Laptop supports this OS with your Laptop manufacturer? These are 2 different models.
  3. Was it working fine before?
  4. Do you have a router compatible with the 6GHz band? Please provide the model.
  5. The other laptop, does it use a 6GHz band without any problems?
  6. Have you run # lspci command to verify the wireless card is recognized?
  7. Make sure that the module is installed properly running # modinfo iwlwifi command.
  8. Type # lsmod | grep iwlwifi to make sure the driver is loaded.
  9. Type # dmesg | grep iwlwifi. If the result is empty, the driver wasn’t initialized.
  10. Type the # dmesg | grep “no suitable firmware found!” command and the result is not empty, that means that you don't have a suitable FW, you need to check here for supported FW or here for latest versions.

  1. As I understand, the Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX211 is the pre-installed Wi-Fi card in your laptop, is that correct?
Yes, however it is not a laptop, it is a small desktop.
  2. Did you make sure that your Laptop supports this OS with your Laptop manufacturer?
P360 tiny is a small desktop and it does supports Ubuntu linux officially.
  3. Was it working fine before?
It was and still is working for 5GHz & 2.4GHz.
I just got a 6GHz AP so 6GHz was not tested previously.
  4. Do you have a router compatible with the 6GHz band? Please provide the model.
I am using a standalone AP Sophos AP6 840E, but this should not matter, since the wifi card itself shows that it is not using 6GHz band, from iw reg get output.
  5. The other laptop, does it use a 6GHz band without any problems?
Yes, the SSID was configured for 6GHz only for the test.
  6. Have you run # lspci command to verify the wireless card is recognized?
Yes, and this is expected given 5GHz & 2.4GHz works fine :
00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-S PCH CNVi WiFi (rev 11)
  7. Make sure that the module is installed properly running # modinfo iwlwifi command.
I can see the following and no error observed. The output is long, and if you want specific information let me know.
    filename: /lib/modules/6.2.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/iwlwifi.ko
description: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux
    firmware: iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0-72.ucode
  8. Type # lsmod | grep iwlwifi to make sure the driver is loaded.
    It is, see below :
    iwlwifi 569344 1 iwlmvm
    cfg80211 1241088 3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211
  9. Type # dmesg | grep iwlwifi. If the result is empty, the driver wasn’t initialized.
This was included in the initial post, included here again :

Hello, @Snowy

Thank you for the information provided.

In order to investigate this issue, please run with # dmesg | grep ASSERT and attach the output in a txt. file. If the output is empty, please follow this wiki to extract dmesg and trace-cmd.

Also, please provide us the dmesg logs running the command # dmesg > dmesg.log along with your system configuration in general, except for your laptop model, OS kernel version, and router (Which I was able to gather previously thanks to your info).

dmesg | grep ASSERT returns empty output

The wiki was not specific about any action that needs to be carried out with dmesg & trace-cmd, but I have attached a trace-cmd & full dmesg.log.

Intel i7-12700T with 16GB ram & 512GB SSD

Kubuntu 23.04 installed (not upgraded from older versions), firmware was updated manually using

linux-firmware-20230919.tar.gz and reboot has been performed.

Let me know if you need further information or clarification.

Hello, @Snowy

Thank you for the information and the logs provided.

In that case, please provide us an Intel SSU report to have more information so we can investigate, this is for Linux Operating systems. Please run it in the system that cannot connect to 6GHz.

Hello, @Snowy

I hope you are doing great. Thank you for your time.

The 6GHz might not be enabled on the platform by the System Manufacturer. We suggest you work with the Lenovo support team to check if they support and unlock the 6GHz usage in BIOS. This is also recommended in the article about this subject: How to Enable Wi-Fi 6E/ 6GHz Band Using Intel® Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) products
