Our organisation makes Android based test equipment and since the launch of the AC 8260 Wireless adapter, our laptops can no longer connect to our Android hotspots.
We can connect with common USB based WiFi adapters connected via USB to the laptop such as Ralink 802.11n USB Wireless LAN Card
We can also connect via smart phones and tablets, Apple, Samsung, etc
It appears the only device that will not connect is the AC 8260. It connects fine to our workplace router and settings are as per your recommendations on website.
Fault in Windows after attempting to connect and entering the password is as follows;
Windows was unable to connect to 'device name'
Any assistance would be appreciated.
We understand you are having issues connecting to Android hot spots using computers with the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260.
We would like to inform that there shouldn't be any limitation that prevents you from using Android hot spots, actually, many customers use their cell phones as hot spots for mobile internet connectivity with this type of adapter. Here are a couple items that may help you with this issue:
- Make sure you use the configuration mentioned in the advisory: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005544.html Recommended Settings for 802.11n Connectivity
- Place the PC close to the access point and check if works.
- Try connecting to other access points with similar features as your Android system.
- Try disabling Antivirus, firewall, or other features in the PC that may prevent connection to this network.

- Have you tried systems from other vendors using the ac 8265?
- Access point band (2.4 or 5 GHz) and WiFi mode (a,b,g,n or ac).

We have no firewall running but are unable to disable the anti-virus due to internal IT constraints but as indicated in my original post, I can connect to the Hot Spot when using an external USB wifi adapter so if it was a firewall or anti-virus issue I doubt I would be able to connect under these conditions.
Please find system info attached.
We have also noted that the AC 8260 will not connect to an iPhone Hot Spot either. Perhaps this may help.
We reviewed the information and would like to recommend the following actions:
a. Perform a clean installation of the wireless driver:
1. Download the latest driver from your http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support, as second option, you can use the generic version for https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26784/Wireless-Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-7-?product=94150 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows* 7 [19.60.0]
2. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and Uninstall "Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software", if it is installed. When prompted, choose the option to "Discard settings".
3. In Control Panel, Device Manager, Network Adapters, right click on the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 and Uninstall it. Make sure you mark the option to "Delete the driver software for this device".
4. Reboot the PC or scan for hardware changes, check device manager and if an older wireless driver is detected and installed, repeat the actions to uninstall and delete it as well. Repeat this process until the OS does not allow deleting the driver, or until the controller shows as Unknown Device.
5. Remove temporary files: Press the Windows Key + R to open the run box. Type Cleanmgr.exe. Press OK. Select the main drive, usually C:\. Check Temporary Files and uncheck everything else. Press OK.
6. Install the Intel Wireless driver. During the first steps of PROSet/Wireless installation, make sure to customize the installation and install all driver components.
b. Apply the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005544.html Recommended Settings for 802.11n Connectivity.
c. Make sure both Wireless Antennas are firmly plugged into the connectors of the adapter. Please check with the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support for instruction on how to do this.
Thanks for the pictures and the new information. Here are some additional recommendations:
- Try deleting the WiFi network profile and then recreate it.
- Verify if the Wireless hotspot has any Access list restrictions, or maximum number of connected devices that may be preventing the connection.
- Disable Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility, and try to connect letting Windows Manage the Wireless Networks.
Still no joy with all your recommendations. Connection to our workplace and home WiFi is flawless yet it will not connect to the LinuxAndroid WiFi.
Not sure what else I can try to assist you in your investigations. Perhaps we will just have to continue using an external Wifi Dongle.
At this point, we advise you to engage the Computer Manufacturer Support, or the Android device manufacturer to get their input about this. Considering that we tried multiple actions and the connection cannot be established even if you disable Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility and let Windows* manage the wireless connections. Keep in mind that the computer connects well to other hotspots.
You might want to reconfigure the WiFi Android hotspot, try it with no authentication/password, and check if it helps.
