Do we support BT mesh using wireless AC 9560 chipset?

Hi, We are using Intel Celeron 4205U + Intel 9560 2×2ac+BT HW running Ubuntu 18.04 system. From the 9560 spec, it can support BT5.1, here we'd like to check if there is driver update to support BT mesh on Ubuntu. BRs. Dong

Hello Wanderzhd,

I would like to share with you the information that I was able to confirm.:

1) The Intel Wireless-AC 9560 should support Bluetooth mesh using standard LE commands.

2) Regarding to your question about How to switch among the three BT modes: Classic BT, BLE, and BLE mesh using firmware only?

I need to inform you that the Bluetooth controller is dual mode device which means we have both Classic and BLE. There is no option to switch, based on Host the controller executes the commands.

I hope this helps to answer your concern.

Hello Wanderzhd,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We understand that you are looking for a driver update for your wireless adapter in an Ubuntu* system.

As you know, Linux drivers are part of the upstream Linux* kernel. They’re available through the regular channels, distributions or the Linux* kernel archives. We support use of the drivers only in the kernel version the driver was a part of.

Please check the table in the following link for a list of supported devices by the iwlwifi driver.

For further information please check Linux* Support for Intel® Wireless Adapters.

Please let me know if the information provided was useful.

Esteban,

Thanks for the quick response!

Let me clarify a little bit more on my questions.

Here is hardware spec. We can use BLE feature well, and we want to enable BLE mesh on this hardware with latest BlueZ stack with BLE mesh feature. BLE mesh mainly is a software feature but still depending on the driver layer.  Is current driver of 9260/9560 ready for BLE mesh?

Hello Wanderzhd,

Thank you so much for your patience.

I would like to provide an update on the thread and share the following information:

There are 2 design approaches for BT mesh.

1.    Host stack running in the Application process (Host stack shall have the BT mesh implementation)

2.    Host stack running in the Controller(Host stack is offloaded to the controller)

Since in approach #1 there is no dependency on the controller, we can tell BT stack on Ubuntu* using our device should support BT mesh out of the box with design #1, only.

I hope this helps.

Hi Esteban,

As our service layer is using Go, we are still in the progress of bring-up BLE mesh.

Will keep you update. Thanks.

Hi Esteban,

Currently on our other product, we are using Nordic BT chipset, in order to use BLE or BLE mesh, we have to flash different firmware.

Could you please help on how to switch among the three BT mode: classic BT, BLE and BLE mesh using one firmware only, before we proceed with the temporary closure of this inquiry?

 Hello Wanderzhd,

I’m still working on getting this information for you.

In the mean time can you please confirm the following:

  • Can you please provide more details about the Bluetooth product that you are developing? Any further detail will help.
  • What is the purpose to enable the Bluetooth mesh in this environment.

We will be waiting for your response.

Hi Esteban,

Please see below comments:

  • Can you please provide more details about the Bluetooth product that you are developing? Any further detail will help.
  • What is the purpose to enable the Bluetooth mesh in this environment. We have a lot of sensors using Nordic nRF52840 chipset and these sensors are using BLE mesh, now we'd like to use Edge gateway(using AC9560) as a mesh node to gather all the sensors data and send them to our cloud platform.
