GTK rekeying for WoWLAN not behaving as expected

Hello,

I have an Intel nuc5i5ryh. I succesfully configured WoWLAN. However, my PC gets wake as soon as my router ask for 4-way handshake. The only way I have found to stop the unexpected wakeup was to disable the change of the encryption key by the router.

I would expect that the GTK rekeying was the option to take care of the encryption key without waking up the NUC.

My drivers are up to date.

I read all the questions about this matters on the forum and none were satisfying.

Also, I think that I figure out that all the option in the advanced tab are not working as no one seems to change the behaviour.

Here is an external link of an unanswered question that describe exactly my point:https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/getting-wowlan-wake-on-wireless-lan-to-work-properly.2392193/ Getting WoWLAN (Wake-on-Wireless-LAN) to work properly - AnandTech Forums

Hope to have a real answer.

Hello Wasper,

We understand you want to use WoWLAN and at the same time prevent the whole system from waking up for GTK rekeying. We will need to check further on this, since there is little information about this topic.

Here are some initial recommendations and pointers we can provide based on our initial review:

- WoWLAN is not only related to the wireless adapter and there are many factors involved, the issue can be originated in other components (ie: motherboard, BIOS, OS, AP, etc.)

- The http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005585.html Advanced Intel® Wireless Adapter Setting "GTK rekeying for WoWLAN" in fact matches to the Setting id "PMWiFiRekeyOffload".

- It is possible that the GTK rekeying offload is not working properly, specially if we consider that one of the reasons for the system to WoWLAN is if the WiFi adapter receives a GTK Rekeying Error.

Please make sure you apply the following:

- Contact the access point manufacturer and make sure you are using updated firmware for it.

- Check the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005508.html Support Links for Intel® NUC and verify the BIOS of the NUC is up-to-date, also, update the driver for your Wireless Adapter from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/ Intel® Download Center.

- Confirm that the Operating System has any applicable system updates.

For any additional assistance, let us know the following information:

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility Download Intel® System Support Utility, run the tool and use it to create a report with all sections, once the log is created, clink on the "Next" button, Save the report to a file. Then use the Advanced editor options to add the resulting XML file to your post as an attachment.

- Access Point model and firmware version.

Hello Jonathan,

Finally some times during the week-end, I installed the new driver release and sadly, the behaviour seems to be the same as before.

Here is the report asked before:

Hello Wasper,

We checked the log and the adapter looks normal. There are a couple settings you can change in the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005585.html Advanced Properties of the Wireless Driver in order to improve connectivity, however, they are not strictly related to WoWLAN:

Transmit Power: 5. High

U-APSD support: Enabled. Note: you can set this one back to Disabled if the issue persists.

As we mentioned before, WoWLAN includes different factors, so we advise you to perform the following:

- http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html Contact Intel Support for your NUC and make sure you are using the latest BIOS for it.

- Check with Zyxel support, and obtain the most recent firmware for your Access Point.

- Confirm that your Operating system has any applicable system updates.
