Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 issues after upgrade to Windows 8.1

When I try to connect to any Wireless network it goes through the following steps...

-Checking Network Requirements

-Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual

-Can't connect to this network

Then I close the WIFI menu and it shows "Connected"

It won't remember the network upon reboot and the connected icon no longer looks like a WIFI icon, its an ENET icon (no enet cable connected).

I've uninstalled the network adapter from device manager. Removed the drivers from Windows\System32\Drivers

-NETwew00sys

-Netwfw00.dat

Rebooted and it auto installs the default Microsoft Windows 8.1 drivers for the device. - Same issue as above.

I tried the same process above but instead of rebooting and letting it install the Microsoft default drivers I first installed the latest drivers from Intel

(package Wireless_16.5.3_De164) - file version after install is 15.10.3.2 which Intel indicates is correct. Rebooted PC - Issue continues.

I really don't know what else to do. It's not my Router as this is an issue anywhere I go, and my other devices (another Windows 7 and 8 (not 8.1)) work fine. This was working fine after installing Windows 8.1 on launch day but two days ago this became the issue.

This seems to be a Windows* WLAN Autoconfig issue. Please install this package instead: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23258/eng/Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=23258 Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe and then use Intel® Proset to manage WiFi connection.

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply.

I downloaded the file you linked. Uninstalled everything again as listed above and then did the install of the software package you had me download. Everything is still exactly as it was before but now I have 3 additional applications installed...

- WIFI Advanced Statistics

- WIFI Event Viewer

- WIFI Manual Diagnostics

None of these applications seem to help with this issue... am I overlooking something here?

I originally installed the software using the "recommended" setting which only installs...

- WIFI Advanced Statistics

- WIFI Event Viewer

- WIFI Manual Diagnostics

I uninstalled and reinstalled using "custom" and it also allowed me to turn on the install of the "WIFI Connection Utility" so I have it now!

The utility remembers my WIFI profile(SSID) which is an improvement since Windows wasn't, but it still takes about 2 minutes before it will auto connect.

Also if I try to force it to manually connect it won't connect. I still have to wait about 2 minutes to manually connect as well.

It should be listed as "WiFi Connection Utility" in Apps, or go to the right side of the taskbar (system tray) on the desktop, and search within the hidden icons for Intel® Proset/Wireless WiFi; double click on it and go to Advanced, you will have two possible options: "Use Windows to manage WiFi" or "Enable WiFi Control".

If it shows the first one then Intel® Proset is already managing the connection; otherwise please click "Enable WiFi Control" and test. I am very positive this will fix your issue.

Hi joe_intel,

I installed a number of regular Windows updates a few days ago and after the reboot lost my internet connection. Wi-fi show a strong signal but no connection to the internet. I also tried the wired connection but the same outcome. The Windows network check indicates potential issues with both the driver of the Wi-Fi adapter and the Ethernet adapter. I deinstalled the Windows updates, but with no effect. I also downloaded and installed the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23258/eng/Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=23258 Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe and used your advise listed above to check in the "WiFi Connection Utility". Unfortunately that also did not solve my problem. What I did notice was that I first did the basic install of the Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe and could not find the "WiFi Connection Utility" app. I then deinstalled Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe to reinstall it with the full custom apps. During the deinstall, while removing the drivers, my internet connection was shortly up-and-running again, but before the deinstall was ready the same problem of no internet connection reoccured again. Can you advice on what to do?

I am running a Dell Inspiron laptop, Core i5, SSD with Windows 8.1 (installed that a few days after it became available and without problems) and the following network adapters (2) are listed: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230 and Qualcomm Atheros AR8162/8166/8168 PCI-E Fast Ethernet-controler (NDIS 6.30). I did notice that prior to the installation of Wireless_16.5.3_e164.exe the list of networkadapters was longer (6 to 8) but most mention the N 2230.

Any advice and help is much appreciated!

Regards, Robert (from The Netherlands, Europe)

Hello Robert, I am really sorry for your issue.

Please bear in mind that the original issue posted by the thread starter seems to be different from yours and was actually solved. In this case I will try my best to provide you with a solution but I certainly recommend creating a new thread if the issue persists.

Now back to the issue itself. Based on the fact that it started with Windows* Updates and both network adapters are not working properly I first recommend to fix the TCP/IP stack. You may try running the Microsoft* "Fix it" tool found in the link or using the steps with elevated CMD window.

Another option is rolling back with Windows* System Restore.

It could be related to the authentication, what type are you using?

WPA2 AES. I have tried with No Encryption and it reacts the same way.

I'm facing the same issue too with the N2230 wireless card. Even after connecting to the internet it still displays the message "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" and it disconnects after a minute.

Hi, I had the same problem. Then I changed the energy setting off my laptop. I changed the setting for the wireless network, which solved my problem.

StrMark, could you please be more specific? What energy settings? Power options? Which settings specifically?

Thank you anandsht!

I had tried the 16.7.0 drivers but to my mistake I used the e64 for 8.0 not e164 for 8.1

Your reply made me realize my mistake. Works perfectly with 16.7.0_e164.exe
