Unable to get 866Mbs on Intel 9260 Wifi.

I'm looking if anyone else has had an issue with the 9260 Wifi chip.

I recently upgraded to this chip over a killer chipset.

Currently when I start my laptop, the connection will hit 866Mbs for 4-6 seconds then it will default to 433.3. On my phone its hitting 866 and on another laptop its hitting 866. The router is close by about 8 ft away. When I move right up to the router, nothing changes still the same connection speed.

No matte what options I change on the laptop or on the router, the connection always defaults back to 433.3. I noticed if I select 40Mhz band which should default to 400Mbs it cuts that in half to 200.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm questioning if the antennas are the problem or if I need to switch this card out with something else?

Laptop Model: ge62mvr leopard pro

Router: RT-AC86U

Router settings:

  • 5Ghz band with Wireless Mode: N/AC Mixed
  • Channel bandwidth 80Mhz
  • WPA AES with WPA2

Laptop settings

  • Windows 10 Pro ver 1903
  • Everything set normal and on Auto
  • Power level max

I've tried a clean install, same results. Using the latest drivers

Hello AGerv,

Thank you for posting on the Intel Community.

I understand you’re having performance issues with the Intel® Wireless-AC 9260. Please try the following steps that might help you fixing the issue:

1.   Please perform a clean installation using the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) driver since they have customized it to properly work on your system. Link: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GP62MVR-7RFX-Leopard-Pro.html#down-driver&Win10%2064

2.   Try the laptop on another network to see if the issue persists.

3.   Check with the system manufacturer (MSI*) if you have the latest BIOS version. Support link of the OEM: https://www.msi.com/support

4.   Change the Intel Advanced Wi-Fi Adapter Settings to Improve Slow Performance and Intermittent Connections. Link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005585/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html

5.   If the issue persists by following the prior steps, perform a clean installation using the Intel generic drivers. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28794/Windows-10-Wi-Fi-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-Adapters?product=99445

Hope this helps,

Nope, I've tried everything to get it working but no matter what I try it always reverts to 433.3Mbs. I bought an external AC1900 USB and had no issues with it connecting at the proper speed. I've tested multiple phones, tablets and all connect at 866.7 with the exception of this card. As I said when I boot up, for about 4-5 seconds it will jump to 866.7 and then fall to 433.3 and remain there. As a last test, I moved to card into an Asus laptop I have and it does the samething, clocks at 433.3.

Hello AGerv,

Thank you very much for letting me know the outcome.

Since you have tried all the troubleshooting steps suggested, I would highly recommend you to contact the Original Equipment Manufacturer since they have built the laptop and customized all the components to properly work with your system.

In case you need it, here's the support link for MSI*:
