WiFi download rate slow down.

A WiFi mystery. First, the equipment involved: an HP 15-ay039wm notebook C running Intel802.11ac Intel Dual Band Wireless AC3165, a Linksys EA7500 router, all operating on 5GHz WiFi. Distance between the router and the HP notebook is about 15 feet. HP notebook runs on Windows 10 64 bit. WiFi driver is up to date.

Issue: as measured by Speedtest.net, WiFi download speed is usually around 180 megs. However, sometimes, without warning or indication of trouble, the download speed as shown by Speedtest.net will decrease to 50 megs download. Internet transfers are not interrupted. Download speeds on the HP notebook return to normal after uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel Dual Band Wireless AC3165, Of course, there's no indication of what causes the isses, and no hint of whether the problem lies with the Speednet.net test or not. Resetting the Linksys router makes no difference.

Hello Lillard,

As we understand, the internet speed in you system is dropping from 180 Mbps to 50 Mbps. Please apply the following actions to discard some common issues:

- Check for Windows* updates and make sure the OS has any applicable patches installed.

- Try the following steps to perform a clean driver installation:

1. You can use the driver from the https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support as first option, if the issue persists please try the generic version of https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26924/Wireless-Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-10-?product=89450 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10 [19.70.0]

2. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and Uninstall "Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software", if it is installed. When prompted, choose the option to "Discard settings".

3. In Control Panel, Device Manager, Network Adapters, right click on the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 and Uninstall it. Make sure you mark the option to "Delete the driver software for this device".

4. Reboot the PC or scan for hardware changes, check device manager and if an older wireless driver is detected and installed, repeat the actions to uninstall and delete it as well. Repeat this process until the OS does not allow deleting the driver, or until the controller shows as Unknown Device.

5. Remove temporary files: Press the Windows Key + R to open the run box. Type Cleanmgr.exe. Press OK. Select the main drive, usually C:\. Check Temporary Files and uncheck everything else. Press OK.

6. Install the Intel Wireless driver. During the first steps of PROSet/Wireless installation, make sure to customize the installation and install all driver components.

- Apply the configuration from the advisory: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005544.html Recommended Settings for 802.11n Connectivity.

If the issue persists, we will need additional information, starting with 2 logs from the Intel® SSU, one with the system working fine, and another one when the speed has dropped to 50 Mbps. Please follow these steps to get the logs:

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility Download Intel® System Support Utility, run the tool and use it to create a report with all sections, once the report is created, click on the "Next" button. In the following screen, save the report to a file. Then use the Advanced editor options of the communities to add the resulting file to your post as an attachment.

Hello Lillard,

We reviewed the information provided, the adapter is connected using 802.11ac and the data rate of the connection is 433.3 Mbps. However, the driver is not the recommended one.

- Please apply our previous recommendations: Windows update, and clean driver installation with the steps provided.

Let us know the results, and if the issue persists, please get the 2 SSU logs as we requested.

Important note: When adding the logs to thread, please do not copy/paste the text. Instead, save the log output to a file by clicking the "Next" button when you see the log in SSU. In the following screen, save the report to a file. Then use the Advanced editor options of the communities to add the resulting file to your post as an attachment.

Having reverted to a driver from the HP support web site, the issue seems to have been resolved. Apparently the driver offered through Intel's driver update utility - which had been the driver I was using - is not the correct driver. I'll need to be more circumspect about using the Intel utility in the future.

Hello Lillard,

We are glad to know that the latest HP driver solved the issue. We always recommend using the OEM driver as first option, also, a manual update is ofter preferred over the IDUU updates.
