Wlan doest not work

Hi

The problem is that even if the device is a few meters away from the router, it cannot find a decent signal.  I live in an apartment building and usually wi-fi connections show up a lot. 

the latest updates have been downloaded from the Intel website.

Does not work in win 10 or Ubuntu.

The machine is intel nuc NUC6CAYB

Have you checked inside to see whether one of the antenna leads has come off the WiFi card? It sure sounds like what would happen if this were the case...
