iwlwifi weak signal for Intel AC 9462 on Linux

optimisme

Wireless signal may be 90% on windows and 30% on Linux using the same machine and location.
This happens on different distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora
It is unusable because of the disconnections and the speed.

Some information:

driver=iwlwifi driverversion=5.8.0-29-generic firmware=46.8902351f.0

Hello optimisme,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

This is an interesting behavior and I would like to further investigate this for you.

To better assist you please provide the following information:

  • For how long you’ve been experiencing this behavior?
  • How are you measuring the signal in Linux*?
  • Was the system working as expected before? If so, were any changes made?
  • Is this the original adapter that came with your computer or did you install it?

Please run the following tool and attach the reports generated.

Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) for Linux* Download link.

1.Open the application and click on "Scan" to see the system and device information.

2.By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the "Summary View".

3.Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".

4.To save your scan, click on "Next", then "Save".

Additionally please run the following commansd and share the output in a .txt file:

  •  modinfo iwlwifi
  •  lsmod | grep iwlwifi
  • # dmesg | grep ASSERT (If the output is empty please follow the following article.)

-For how long you’ve been experiencing this behavior?

Since I bought the computer

-How are you measuring the signal in Linux*?

'Networkmanager' and and also 'nmcli dev wifi'

-Was the system working as expected before?

Never worked, this looks like a linux issue (driver or config)

-Is this the original adapter that came with your computer or did you install it?

Yes

-# dmesg | grep ASSERT (If the output is empty please follow the following article.)

I don't know what to do with this information, the out is empty. I added the 'trace.dat' file from that article.

Tell me if you need more information.

Hello optimisme,

Thank you so much for your response and the information attached.

I wwould like to investigate this for you, however, I would appreciate if you could confirm the following:

  • We understand that the signal strength issue will occur only with Linux*. Are there any steps that we could follow to replicate this behavior?
  • If possible, please provide a picture/screenshots when the device is showing poor signal.
  • How many units are affected by this behavior?
  • Please provide more details about your troubleshooting steps performed so far.
  • What is your network environment? (Please provide details about router manufacturer, bands tested, etc)

Hi,

Sorry for the delay.

This is the signal information from two different computers with different Intel NICs. Both computers are at the same location. Windows always has better connection, Linux on the (AC 9462) is not even usable.

Fedora gave me similar results, this is when I began suspecting this is a problem of the Linux driver for Intel Wifi cards.

  • We understand that the signal strength issue will occur only with Linux*. Are there any steps that we could follow to replicate this behavior?

Yes, the problem occurs only with Linux. Tested on Ubuntu 20.04, Fedora 33 and Elementary OS 5.1

  • If possible, please provide a picture/screenshots when the device is showing poor signal.

See previous posts, tell me if you need something more

  • How many units are affected by this behavior?

At least my 2 units, I suspect every single unit using Intel Wireless

  • Please provide more details about your troubleshooting steps performed so far.

Just run Intel Wireless on Linux, it performs worst then windows.

  • What is your network environment?

Home Network at home, and Eduroam at High School (where I work as a computer science teacher)

Also, I have tried the intructions from the next sites without success. Anyway it does not look like an isolated problem.

I have the same problem on a newly bought samsung laptop with AC-9462 REV=0x354. It only gets around 60% signal quality when standing literally next to the router, if I go to the next room it disconnects due to poor signal, while on Win10 I still get a decent signal with good speeds.

I already tried kernel versions 5.4 and 5.8, also tried all the workarounds provided in this topic and around the web to no avail.

Let me apologize for any inconvenience.

Hello optimisme, I just received an update on this matter.

We need the specific outcomes received while entering every single command line. The attached information does not contain those results. Please share the screenshots including every single command line outcomes following the instructions below:

WiFi troubleshooting steps

Step 1: Check whether the kernel version supports this device:

The reference table of Wireless adapters and corresponding kernel versions is available in the following link:

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi

The latest FWs are available by the following link:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/

If the kernel version corresponds to the Wireless adapter, proceed with step 2.

Step 2: Check whether the Wireless adapter is connected correctly:

Type the following command to the terminal: # lspci

Verify that the Intel network controller is identified, as on a picture below. If not, then the system doesn't identify the Intel networidentifyk adapter and you will need to make sure it's properly integrated. You may need to request help from the system manufacturer. If the wireless adapter is properly identified - proceed with the step 3.

Alberto_R_Intel_0-1607702847238.png

Step 3: Check whether this is an iwlwifi issue:

Type the following command to the terminal: # modinfo iwlwifi (example of the command output is on the picture below). If there is no output, then the module isn’t installed this is the distribution installation issue.

Alberto_R_Intel_1-1607702922963.png

Please type: # lsmod | grep iwlwifi

Alberto_R_Intel_2-1607702995630.png

If the result is empty, the driver hasn't been loaded. Most likely to be a distribution issue.

To verify, please type: # dmesg | grep iwlwifi

Alberto_R_Intel_3-1607703111462.png

If the result is empty, the driver wasn’t initialized and this is a distribution issue. If the result is populated as on the above picture, proceeed with the step 4.

Step 4: Check whether the suitable firmware is installed:

Please type: # dmesg | grep “no suitable firmware found!”

Alberto_R_Intel_4-1607703202717.png

If the result is not empty, it means you don’t have a suitable FW (api mentioned in the dmesg).

Please visit here https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi for supported FW, or here https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/ for the latest versions.

If these steps didn't reveal the issue or didn't solve the problem, proceed with the Step 5:

Step 5: Collect the debug data:

Please type: # dmesg | grep ASSERT

If the output is empty, please follow this wiki: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi/debugging to extract dmesg and trace-cmd.

If the output has value, please collect from the wiki FW dump too.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Albert R.

Yes, I have seen it.

I need time to take screenshots of your recommendations, but as you can see on the previous posts, the NIC is properly detected and the driver running like in your examples.

Hello optimisme, I just received an update on this matter.

The dmesg.txt indicate the following:

Conflict between TLV & NVM regarding enabling LAR (TLV = enabled NVM =disabled)

Please try the command as suggested in:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1040547/system-with-intel-wireless-ac-9462-freezes-unless-wifi-is-diabled-due-to-missing

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi

sudo modprobe iwlwifi lar_disable=Y

Once you get the chance, please let us know the results.

Hi,

Thank you for

- Not solving the problem

- Asking me to reopen the ticket several times without solving the problem

- Asking me to send the information several times without solving the problem

Your hardware works great on Windows, congratulations.

But it does not work on Linux.

I bought an M1 (yes, the Mac M1 that is cheaper and faster).

My Wifi problems are solved

Thank you for your time, I won't need your help in a long time
