mDNS packets not received on Intel Wi-Fi chips

I have 2 Microsoft Surface tablets, and I want them to resolve a Zeroconf service running on our WiFi network. This service is announced using mDNS packets by a device using the same WiFi.

I installed Wireshark on both tablets, ran it on the WiFi interface and filtered for protocol mDNS. On one of them, I saw packets from many of the devices on the network and specifically the service I wanted to resolve. This was the Surface PC with a Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC wireless chip.

On the other tablet (with an Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 chip), when running Wireshark, I see only the mDNS packets sent from the device itself and no other mDNS packet. This issue goes away completely the moment I connect an ethernet cable over a USB dongle - the mDNS packets are immediately received.

I have attempted the following on the device with the Intel chip, none if which helped:
  1. Ensure no power saving measure is turned on
  2. Turn Wi-Fi on and off
  3. Disable and reenable the Wi-Fi chip
  4. Use Intel® Driver & Support Assistant to install the Wi-Fi driver
  5. Download and install the latest drivers for the tablet, obtained from the official Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102633
  6. Change the registry key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters\EnableMDNS to 1
  7. Add the registry key at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient\EnableMulticast set to 0
Attached you will find SSU exports and txt files with most of the results from running `netsh wlan show all` (truncated for brevity). Those are for both of the tablets, I also have another laptop with an Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 chip that has the same issue, I can provide that as well if needed.

I would really appreciate any help or information on this topic. For us, consistency in resolving the service over Wi-Fi is key to our product.

Hello,

Thank you for the quick response.

I uninstalled the drivers for the Wi-Fi adapter until the button was not available and I am left with the drivers you see in the attached screenshot.

Still, no mDNS packets show up on the Wi-Fi interface. Please let me know how we can go about fixing this! Attached you will also find a screenshot from Wireshark showing this issue - the MDNS packets are only sent out of the device and never received.

Kind regards,

_Jacob

Hi _Jacob,

To help diagnose the issue further, could you please provide insights on the following questions:

  1. Have there been any recent changes to the router's configuration or firmware updates that might affect mDNS packet transmission?
  2. Additionally, could you please clarify whether the wireless card in your system is pre-installed (included in the system) or if you have changed or installed the wireless card yourself?
  3. What is the brand and model of your Router/Access Point?
  4. Are the affected devices connected to the same Wi-Fi channel as the devices that are working correctly?
  5. Was this issue occurred as well to 2.4GHz, 5Ghz or 6GHz bands?

For the Wireless adapter not working, I suggest following the steps here in this link:

Wi-Fi Adapter Is Disabled or Is Not Working
