Compatibility Issue: Intel Fortran Compiler (ifort) Required for Abaqus User Subroutine Compilation

Hello Intel Support Community,

We are encountering a critical compatibility issue with the Intel Fortran compiler that is impacting our ability to use Abaqus for simulations.

Abaqus requires the Intel Fortran Classic compiler (ifort) to compile custom user subroutines. However, the latest Intel oneAPI HPC Toolkit (2025) appears to default to the LLVM-based Fortran compiler (ifx), which is not compatible with Abaqus.

We specifically need to compile user subroutines like VDISP. The change in the default Fortran compiler is preventing us from doing this.

Technical Details:

  • Required Intel Fortran Compiler: Intel Fortran Classic (ifort), version 2021.8.0 (previously included in oneAPI HPC Toolkit 2023.0)

  • Current Intel oneAPI HPC Toolkit: 2025 (ifort not the default)

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a recommended solution or workaround? Specifically, we are looking for:

  • Guidance on how to obtain a compatible version of the Intel Fortran Classic compiler (ifort).

  • Information on any potential workarounds for compiling Abaqus user subroutines with the latest oneAPI HPC Toolkit.

Any assistance or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Sabbir,

We would like to inform you that Intel® HPC Toolkit (Version: 2023.0) is old & unsupported. Please note that the older versions of Intel® Toolkits are not available publicly, only the latest version Intel® Toolkits and other latest products are available for download and installation.

Intel® has decided to discontinue support for Intel® Toolkits (including all versions released in 2024 and earlier) are not supported anymore. We urge users to upgrade to the latest version of Intel® developer tools. The unsupported versions do not include the latest functional and security updates. These versions are targeted to be removed after a period. We understand that this might be challenging, but it's important to note that the users with active priority support can only access older product versions.

For more information refer to the link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/release-notes/oneapi-supported-product-versions.html.

Intel® oneAPI users with active Intel Priority Support can access older versions via a secure portal you gain access to as part of your support subscription.

Have a great day ahead!
