This blog was posted on behalf of Peri Periakaruppan, Senior Corporate Safety Engineer. As part of his job Peri defines Corporate Safety Standards & Training for global implementation, as well as managing strategic safety projects, including our Safety Always campaign.

At Intel, safety has always been a core part of our culture and a value throughout our manufacturing operations—from our global Environmental Health and Safety Policy, to our multisite registration for the safety certification Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001. But one thing we have learned over our decades of implementing safety programs, is that the work of building broad safety awareness and a strong safety culture is never done.

This week, we are celebrating the 2019 ILO World Day for Safety and Health at Work, showcasing our employees who are role modelling safety and going above and beyond to make Intel a safe and healthy place to work. The day also marks the one year anniversary of the launch of our new global “Safety Always” campaign, created by Intel’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) and Corporate Services teams to engage Intel employees in creating a safe working environment and positive safety culture across the company.

SafetyAlways4-300x169.jpgMultiple events and resources were launched as part of the campaign. We started by celebrating the 2018 ILO World Day for Safety and Health at Work at 43 locations. Sites hosted a variety of activities for employees to learn about safety such as CPR training, Occupational Health information booths, hands-on fire safety demonstrations, wellness resources, bicycle maintenance workshops, home emergency preparedness seminars and more.

SafetyAlways2-300x235.jpgA central Safety Always page on our internal employee website was launched, providing resources on injury reporting, cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs), and key contacts within the EHS organization for safety-related issues. We created a new regular newsletter to managers along with a Manager Toolbox to provide additional resources to help managers support conversations with their employees regarding safety expectations. The team also created a quarterly “Hazard Hunt” online game to provide employees with a fun way to learn about potential hazards and test their knowledge about safety practices at work.

SafetyAlways3-300x276.jpgA variety of building signage and collateral were deployed quarterly – from floor stickers to digital signage – to capture employees’ attention about workplace injury prevention tips using fun characters on different topics including parking lot safety, distracted walking and ergonomic injury prevention. Short video messages from business leaders were created and advertised through email and internal online sites to help encourage employees to be mindful about safety.

In 2019 we will continue to find creative ways to engage our employees through multiple activities and communications. We expanded our reach in 2019 from 43 to 50 sites that are hosting celebrations for global safety week - ensuring that safety always is top of mind. We also added a new element to the program this year with our Global Safety Star recognition. This was a peer recognition program and our 10 stars were selected out of 140 nominations. The winners were shared with all employees via email, posters, an internal news article and a screen splash on employees’ computers globally. This was an exciting way to recognize the amazing accomplishment our employees, which ranged from educating school children about safety, to designing safer manufacturing equipment.
