Event Highlights and Top Projects Built on Intel® AI Technologies

On October 12-13 this year, the University of Washington hosted DubHacks’24 hackathon. Team Intel provided free access to the Intel® Tiber™ AI Cloud platform and Intel® AI PCs for the participant developers to build their hackathon solutions. The attendees got an opportunity to learn about and unlock the potential of AI PCs and oneAPI-powered AI software tools and frameworks optimizations and the latest hardware including the Intel® Gaudi® AI accelerator available on Intel Tiber AI Cloud.

Overview of the Hackathon:

  • The event was a success with over 1000 attendees.
  • 320+ new users signed up to the Intel Tiber AI Cloud.
  • Intel® Liftoff (our AI startups accelerator program) team joined hands with the University of Washington’s student startups incubator program DubHacks Next.
  • Intel had a dedicated hackathon track called the ‘Best Use of Intel AI’ in which 23 project teams participated.
  • 300+ students learned about Intel’s AI developer resources at our two hands-on workshops at the event – one introducing them to AI PC and Intel Tiber AI Cloud, and the other focused on Intel Gaudi deep learning accelerator.
  • Intel provided 40 AI PC development kits for the attendees to explore the potential of AI PCs and utilize their power for accelerated AI development.
  • Team Intel provided guidance to the attendees on Intel Liftoff Program for AI startups and our educational initiatives namely Intel® Student Ambassador Program and Educator Program.

Winning AI Projects at DubHacks’24 Hackathon

Following were the top projects that won the ‘Best Use of Intel AI’ hackathon track:

SearchMate, the 1st-prize winner, is a smart search assistant capable of finding local files and previously browsed tabs on your desktop that match your search query. It eliminates the need to remember file names stored earlier. It can summarize the content gathered from multiple files and also works well with images. The team leveraged accelerated hardware on Intel Tiber AI Cloud and AI PC. The project’s backend uses Python*, specifically the Hugging Face* CLIP model for embeddings. While the frontend is based on JavaScript* and Electron* framework.

WanOne, the 2nd-prize winner, is an LGBTQ+ assistant that aims at providing mental health support to those deprived of any or enough resources for traditional therapy. The team submitted their LLM to the Hugging Face* Leaderboard powered by Intel. The project utilizes Intel® Tiber™ Trust Services to attain cybersecurity enhancements for handling confidential data in the healthcare solution. It offers safety features such as feedback buttons and conversation-ending controls enabling users to have self-controlled interactions.

brAInstorm, the 3rd-prize winner, is a GenAI-based web application that helps writers convert their brainstormed unstructured text and audio snippets into coherent ideas and summaries. It thus helps enhance their creativity, and aids the challenging and messy process of brainstorming. The team used Intel AI PC for fine-tuning the OpenAI* Whisper speech recognition model and Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor available on Intel Tiber AI Cloud.

All the three winning teams were awarded free credits of Intel Tiber AI Cloud for further enhancement of their hackathon solution. Each of the five 1st-place winning team members also received a Lenovo* AI PC.

Intel’s Hands-on Workshops at the Hackathon

Team Intel successfully trained 300+ attendees at the two insightful workshops that it hosted at the event:

  • Workshop #1: ‘Kickstart Your Projects with Intel® Technology’ - 200+ students attended this workshop during which our experts gave an overview of the Intel Tiber AI Cloud, demonstrating how to access AI training and preview machines available on the platform. The attendees also learned about utilizing the computational power of CPU, GPU and Neural Processing Unit (NPU), and the OpenVINO™ Toolkit using AI PCs.

  • Workshop #2: ‘Getting Started with LLMs and Intel® Gaudi® AI Accelerators - In this workshop, 120+ attendees learned how to fine-tune LLMs and expedite multi-modal inference using the Intel® Gaudi®2 AI accelerator available on Intel Tiber AI Cloud.
