Sustainability has become a key imperative for many organizations worldwide. A recent IDG research study, commissioned by Google Cloud discovered 90% of organizations surveyed have already made sustainability a priority and/or performance metric for their IT department.

At Intel, we have long-standing leadership in sustainability as part of our mission to have our technology improve our lives and experiences as part of Intel’s 2030 RISE commitment.

Intel’s Key Sustainability Objectives
More concretely, our sustainability investments and strategies are covered in depth in the most recent Intel 2020-2021 Corporate Responsibility Report.

Intel is focused on specific sustainability objectives, each with measurable targets and specific investments and actions. Here are three of those objectives

  • Meet 100% of our global operations energy needs with renewable sources by 2030

  • Create smarter, more efficient data centers

  • Use circular economy strategies to minimize waste while achieving zero total waste to landfill

Digging in on those goals, here is where we are at in realizing each of those objectives:

Renewable Energy
While relying solely on renewable energy sources in less than 10 years may seem like an aggressive goal, we are already well on our way.

In 2020 alone, we increased our use of renewable energy supply and purchases from 71% to 82% and conserved 161 million kWh of energy during the year.

Smarter, More Efficient Data Centers
It’s estimated that data centers worldwide utilized over 200 terawatt hours of electricity in 2018 alone1. Controlling energy consumption in a world where data centers are handling rapidly growing amounts of data is a challenge.

That’s why Intel is committed to transforming data center efficiency—for ourselves and others—through comprehensive, innovative strategies and a goal to increase product energy efficiency 10x for Intel server microprocessors by 2030.

For example, we’ve customized Intel IT rack designs to optimize space and power density, providing up to 70% more rack space in the same footprint. Through innovative cooling strategies, Intel has achieved a cooling density of 1,100 W/sq ft, which is 10x greater than the industry average.

Circular Economy and Zero Waste to Landfill
In 2020, Intel reused, recovered, or recycled 63% of our manufacturing waste, or a total of approximately 179,000 tons. We also met a goal of 5% total waste to landfill, and we recycled over 160,000 tons, or 97% of our construction waste.  As of January 1, 2020, less than 1% of Intel’s annual hazardous waste went to landfill.

“Sustainable IT, Decoded” – A Masterclass to Discover What IT Leaders Can Do
Google Cloud has also made bold commitments to sustainability, and that’s why we’re proud to partner with Google Cloud to drive and accelerate IT sustainability efforts for all. Google Cloud has 28 regions enabled by Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, and in choosing which region to host your application there are multiple considerations: latency, price, and the carbon emissions associated with the electricity that powers your application.

We’ve created an easy way for you to start that journey with Intel by attending the free, 45-minute “Sustainable IT, Decoded” Masterclass, an online e-learning experience covering the three themes of renewable energy, efficiency, and waste.

The class presents fundamental trends and facts, as well as a short quiz to test your knowledge and help you lead the conversation within your organization’s sustainability efforts. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate and gain access to the knowledge hub with additional, valuable resources.

IT sustainability is critical for all of us. We’re confident that with the right strategies and innovation, we can achieve amazing results and enhance the health of our planet and ourselves.

I invite you to discover even more about our goals and accomplishments by visiting us on the web at intel.com/responsibility.
