Change NIC Speed on OFF state (NIC I226-T1)

Hi,

We have purchased x200 Precision 3680, we encounter an issue when trying to use WakeOnLan with the additional 2.5Gbe network card (Intel I226-T1). Our switch is supporting 100/1000/2500 speed, however, seems the NIC I226-T1 is decreasing to 10MB when the computer is on off state. In that way we can't use the 2.5GB card we purchased. I have rad online there are some options to make some speed changes in the NIC, but I can't find any of these in the NIC properties. Hope you guys have some other ideas

Thanks

Hi Galvinchid,

Warm greetings and good day to you.

As pertaining your issue, we would recommend following the steps below and let us know the outcome.

  • Update the drivers to the latest available version provided by the manufacturer
  • Ensure that Energy Efficiency Ethernet settings on the driver and router side (if available) are disabled, by following the steps below:
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the network adapter you want, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Advanced tab, look for Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) option and make the appropriate changes you want.
  • Change the following settings from the advanced menu in the controller properties
  1. Large Send Offload V2 (IPV4)
  2. TCP Checksum Offload (IPV6)

Hi,

Thanks for the replay, I have disabled the

  1. Large Send Offload V2 (IPV4)
  2. TCP Checksum Offload (IPV6)

And make sure the EEE is disabled.

It didn't help.

Any other idea how can we achieve that?

Hello galavichid,

Thank you for the update. There are few things that we can try,

  1. Please go to the network adapter properties and go to power management tab and please see if Reduce link speed during system idle is enabled, if yes, please disable it.
  2. Under the Wake on LAN in same tab, the options Wake on Magic Packet and Wake on Pattern Match should be enabled.
  3. In the network adapter property, configure the advanced driver properties, please in advanced, under the property, selection of WOL & Shutdown Link Speed its value , please check is set to what? please select the value as desired.

These are few basic things that we can do in from the WakeOnLAN functionality. Please let us know if still the issue exists.

Regards,

Subhashish.

Hi @Subhashish

I am using driver 2.1.4.3 (2/20/2024)

I don't have any of the options you mentioned. I am running Windows 11.

Am I missing something?

Hello galavichid,

Thank you for confirmation and sharing the details. These settings should usually be present. However as it is not in your case, We are checking this internally with our team, we will update you again at earliest.

Kindly await our next response. We appreciate you time and patience and efforts while we work together towards a resolution.

Thank you for being Intel's valued customer.

Hi galavichid,

When the system enters S3, S4, S5, the LAN device must downshift the link speed to the speed which consumes minimal power (i.e., 10Mbps) according to Energy Star requirement.

In I225 NVM 1.73 and later version (i.e., 1.82), we implemented that LAN device can only link at 10Mbps in S3, S4, S5 (refer to I225 NVM readme). The device can't connect at 2.5G, 1G, 100M in S3, S4, S5 based on FW design.

This is also implemented in I226.

Thanks for choosing intel

Hi Jerome,

Thanks for the detailed info. Would it be possible to get older FW which can support 100mb on S3\S4\S5?

Or in a different way, can it be requested from Intel?

We need to find a solution for these 200x units we purchased.

Thanks

Is this really true for S3? I have a I226-T1 NIC on a Windows 11 PC.  The cable is connected to a switch port that supports 100M/1G/2.5G speeds. When in standby (S3) the link speed is reduced to 100M and thus WOL is possible. My problem is that on Linux I cannot get 100M link up in suspend, only 10M works.

Hello galavichid,

Greetings for the day!

Hope you are doing well.

We have checked this in our end. Unfortunately there is no other way to achieve this. Also the downgrade wont be possible because the lowest NVM version for I226 is 2.22 and 1.89 for I225. The decrease in speed is as per design.

Hi @Subhashish

Thanks again for your replay.

There is an option to request new development of feature via Intel? So we can ask this option to be added in the NIC properties?

Hi galavichid,

Thank you for writing to us. We understand that as there are 200 units effected by this issue. As of your ask to facilitate the 100mb on S3/S4/S5 by requesting a customization on the firmware for the NIC, I am not sure whether just a modification on the future releases of the card will be alone enough or there would be a requirement to make changes in the BIOS as well, for Wake on LAN feature. Plus, the limit of 10 mb on S3/S4/S5 state is done considering the  Energy Star requirement and be compliant with it. Hence I am not sure whether this is achievable/possible at all in the first place. I will check this again internally and will get back to you with an update.

Kindly await our next update.

Regards,

Subhashish.

Hello galavichid,

We apologize for the delay.

We have checked this with our Engineering team and they have confirmed that for I225/I226 ethernet adapters, it can only link to 10MB in S3, S4, S5. Unfortunately, we cannot provide support to higher link speed.

Thank you for understanding.
