Accessing DDR-Ram from FPGA on DE1-SoC -- without an OS

Hi,

I wanted to know if you could write directly to the DDR3-RAM in the HPS of DE1-SoC board without running an OS.

I saw the following post asking something similar, but it wasn't clear if you needed to run an OS.

Link: https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P00003yyTf6SAE/accessing-ddrram-from-fpga-on-de1soc

I'm planning to write a 32-bit RISC CPU and I was between the DE1-SoC and the Arrow SoCKit. The only benefit of the SoCKit is that it has 1GB of DDR3 memory accessible to the FPGA. I just wanted to know it it was possible to access the DDR3 RAM from the FPGA.

Hi,

i) The answer is no, you will need an OS to access the DDR3-RAM in the HPS.

ii) In the forum you can refer that the user is using Linux system which is the user's OS for the board.

iii) Yes, the DDR3 RAM in the HPS is accessible in the FPGA fabric;

The forum below discussed how the DDR3 RAM in the HPS is accessible in the FPGA fabric;

Let me know if you need further information.
