I'm a long retired/disabled EE/CS. I live off grid so like a low power computer. I'm not a gamer or heavy graphics user. In the past I have used FItPC's and a Dell laptop to drive my remote rear projection workstation (Qumi Q5 projector on analog VGA extension- with backup Q5 for direct video testing in my shop.
I've recently upgraded from my old Dell Laptop to two different windows 11 machines- One new i3 processor Dell Inspiron laptop and then the Kamrui mini PC. Both have Intel UHP graphics which seems to have problems generating standard timing for 1280x800. On the brand new (8/2024) direct from Dell Inspiron with integrated UHP graphics the 1280x800 video format on the DVI port was not timed right- left and right sides, and vertical where shrunk say 20%. I tried putting DVI to analog VGA adapter in with similar shrunk display results. I returned the Dell Inspiron thinking it was a fluke of Dell's video implementation. (I was wrong,)
I then ordered a Kamrui mini PC with Intel N97 processor and UHD graphics, which has a VGA port plus 2 DVI ports. While it does not show 1280x800 on the list of formats in display setup it does after it sees the projector EDID information. An odd but minor bug. With just the projector attached, the same shrunk display format is shown (Qumi Q5 projector). Same shrunk display on HDMI or VGA ports. Serendipity struck as I was testing with an old monitor on HDMI port and the backup projector on VGA port. With dual displays set to extend mode- and the projector connected first so it is seen as the primary display, the video format for 1280 x 800 is suddenly correct. I I then disconnect the hdmi port monitor, the video reverts to the shrunken form. The monitor is seen as 1365 x 768 and the trick will not work if is manually changed to other resolutions. It MUST be booted with the projector and monitor plugged in, with monitor powered for this to work.
This is not a sustainable solution as I am shooting for a low power setup and don't want the monitor involved- I rarely use it- only when doing some arduino programming in my shop.
I did try downloading and installing the latest Intel UHP/graphics driver today and that made zero difference.
I wonder if there might be a better solution or if somehow I am screwing up?
Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm dismayed that I may have to go backwards to an older W10 machine to get 1280x 800 support?

Some new findings about this 1280 x 800 video format problem.
If I use the Intel Graphics Command center and change between "maintain scaling" or "custom scaling", this will correct the video timing so I get a full width display. AND IT STAYS WORKING EVEN WITH THE MONITOR UNPLUGGED SO THERE IS ONLY ONE DISPLAY!! (Hurrah!)
It would seem there is some bum timing data on 1280 x800, but some that is OK- which gets selected by when the Graphics Command Center scaling (maintain or custom) is changed.
Duplicating the displays with the monitor plugged in is a bit of a mess- it selects the monitor resolution for both and that is the only one that can be changed.
I miss the "connect to a projector" function.

- Given your current setup, you’ve adjusted the resolution using the Intel Graphics Command Center. Does this resolve the resolution issue on your projector or your monitor?
- Could you also provide the exact model of your monitor?To clarify, are you trying to use the projector as your extended display or as your primary display?

- When you mention that the resolution remains correct even after unplugging the monitor, could you provide more details on this behavior?
