Update OpenGL

Trying to install a new CAD software and received the following message:

"Your "Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset" graphics card's OpenGL version is 2.1. Required is a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.0 or better."

My driver software is up to date. What is my next step? Do I need to replace my graphics card? If so, any suggestions on the new one?

Q45/Q43 is OpenGL 2.0 and is the best you can do. View "Older Graphics Products" here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005524.html Supported APIs and Features for Intel® Graphics Drivers

If you have a desktop with an available PCIe slot, you can add a card.

However, your best approach would be to get a new PC.

Hello meche,

That is correct the Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset supports OpenGL 2.0 and you will need a system that supports up to 3.0, as Al Hill mentioned above if you have a PCie slot you can buy a graphics card for you system, other than that you will need to buy a new computer to work with this type of software.

Best regards,

Ivan.

According to the Intel website here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005524.html Supported APIs and Features for Intel® Graphics Drivers the highest OpenGL that the Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset supports is actually OpenGL 2.1 and not 2.0.

The reason I say this is because I need to update my Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset to OpenGL 2.1. just like meche was able to.

Where does one go to get the last updated drivers for this older chipset?

Would it be here?

For what operating system?

If Windows 10, you can stop now as there are no chipset INF or graphics drivers available.

The machine started out as Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

At the moment it is updated to Windows 10 and the OpenGL version it has running is OpenGL 1.1.

The types of old and simple games that we have been running on it appear to work fine and I have noticed that many of the auto-identifying utilities say the machine appears as running Vista?

My hopes were raised by other users who mentioned similar chipsets, in Windows 10, with OpenGL 2.1, which is all I need.

Most people were trying to go higher. But I do not need to go higher than the level mentioned in the supported graphics drivers

here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005524.html Supported APIs and Features for Intel® Graphics Drivers

The machine is only 3 1/2 years old and it seems a shame to have to junk it simply to get up to the last supported level of OpenGL.

I did find this page on the Intel site when I put in my processor:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/33910/Intel-Core-2-Duo-Processor-E8400-6M-Cache-3-00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB- Downloads for Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

Also there is this Intel page dealing with just the chipset:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81511 Downloads for Graphics Drivers for Intel® Q45 Express Chipset

The current video driver on my machine is version 8.15.10.2702 and the Intel site shows a 8.15.10.2869 driver which is newer.

It appears that can get up to OpenGL 2.1, with this hardware, under Windows 10 and using Intel content / drivers (as noted on their site) - So, any suggestion?

I would otherwise have to buy a new machine for a version of OpenGL that came out in September of 2006.

This is your (Worfdale) processor: http://ark.intel.com/products/33910/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E8400-6M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 (6M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) Product Specifications

Although your machine may be 3.5 years old, the processor is NINE years old.

It is not supported on WIndows 10, nor is your graphics.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000006105.html Intel® Processor Support for Microsoft Windows® 10

And, your graphics are provided by the Q43/Q45 chipset, not the processor.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005526.html Supported Operating Systems for Intel® Graphics Products (look way down the page under "legacy")

The best you can do, if yours is a desktop and has an available PCIe X16 slot, is to find a compatible add-on graphics card. COMPATIBLE is the keyword here.

Again, there is no INF and there is no graphics driver for Windows 10.

In this situation, the Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset supports OpenGL 2.0 and you will need a system that supports up to 3.0.
