Virtual display bug?

Hello,

I found a probably a bug with the Intel graphics driver,

I could copy the same problem with different NUC type of devices,

including Bay Trail, Cherry Trail and Braswell platforms,

they all have the same problem, when the problem appears, the screen goes black, leaving only the mouse cursor on screen,

if you are lucky enough, you could blind-click into the system, then display could come back but it would be the extended desktop screen,

the primary screen is gone.

  1. Display OK at the beginning
  2. Unplug HDMI cable from the system
  3. Now put system to sleep
  4. Plug HDMI cable back to the system (while it's still sleeping)
  5. Now, wake up the system
  6. Problem appears by 100% – a non-exist virtual display – "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" device now appears in device manager/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-434323-308688/nonpnp.jpg
  7. Video output mode being changed to extended desktop automatically: Virtual display + the external display, and virtual display takes over the display priority/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-434323-308689/virtual.jpg
  8. To recover, unplug HDMI and plug it back, display back to normal (Virtual Display – Generic Non-PnP Monitor disappeared), no more extended desktop, and primary display go back to the external display as it should
  9. /servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-434323-308690/novirtual.jpg

Quite obvious that the display output is messed up.

I could copy the same problem on these devices:

1.) Intel Compute Stick STK1AW32SC (Cherrytrail Z8300)

2.) Asrock Beebox N3150-NUC (Braswell N3150)

3.) MINIX NGC-1 (Braswell N3150)

All of them are running the latest Windows 10 Anniversary edition + their latest graphics drivers installed.

"if you are lucky enough, you could blind-click into the system, then display could come back but it would be the extended desktop screen,

the primary screen is gone."

If the system has no password, hitting ENTER could go inside the wrong extended screen.

Hi Ivan,

I found a patch on the Internet that disable the virtual display function of the Intel driver which temporarily fixed the problem,

but it shouldn't be fixed this way because the virtual display capability is lost after applying the patch.

Here is the patch:

; ForceVirtualDisplay

; 1-Enable Virtual Display 0-Disable Virtual Display

cmd /c reg ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000" /v ForceVirtualDisplay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

cmd /c reg ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001" /v ForceVirtualDisplay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

cmd /c reg ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0002" /v ForceVirtualDisplay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Hello kenofstephen,

Just to make sure, did you try the Intel® generic driver? You can download it here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25176/Intel-HD-Graphics-Production-Driver-for-Windows-10-64-bit-N-Series-?product=87258 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25176/Intel-HD-Graphics-Production-Driver-for-Windows-10-64-bit-N-Series-?product=87258

Before installing this driver, I suggest you to uninstall the old driver restart your system and install the generic driver manually.

The problem is not hardware dependent,

I am having the same issue on 3 different platforms of different brands.

They have one thing in common - they are all mini PCs without internal display.

I have tried to replicate this issue but I don't see the same behavior, when this happens does it cause any error in your system unable to work with it?

Interesting, I can copy on 3 different platfoms of different brands with the same method and you say you can't.

May I know how do you copy? Did you exactly follow these steps?

  1. Display OK at the beginning - NO PROBLEM at this point
  2. Unplug HDMI cable from the system - System is still running
  3. Now put system to sleep by pressing the power button - System goes into sleep without HDMI cable attached
  4. Plug HDMI cable back to the system (while it's still sleeping)
  5. Now, wake up the system - You will then see the problem
  6. Problem appears by 100% – a non-exist virtual display – "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" device now appears in device manager

Your China office can copy this problem, I don't know why you can't.
