I have a new NUC7i5BNH and I noticed that the fan ran at constant speed. I found the Cooling page in the BIOS and set it to Quiet - this allowed the fan to slow down and stop when the CPU was not loaded.
I then updated the BIOS - the previous one had a March date, the new one July. With the new BIOS, the fan runs at a constant 3700RPM no matter what I set for the fan mode. I see several other threads reporting the same problem (but was asked to start a new thread). Given that it worked before the BIOS update, it is evidently not a hardware problem and is instead a bug introduced into the BIOS. How can this be escalated to the proper team to fix it?

I was checking /thread/114068 this thread and sure you can use /message/475544# 475544 this configuration because both Intel® NUCs use the same BIOS, in fact, the processor installed on the Intel® NUC Kit NUC7i7BNH requires more heat dissipation than the one installed on your Intel® NUC, so the fan cooling configuration exceeds the requirements.

I had already posted in the first thread you referenced and was directed by "Alberto R" to post a separate thread. The configuration there does not help - the latest BIOS ignores any changes I make to the settings on this page and continues to run the fan at a constant speed. It doesn't matter what I pick - even "Fanless" - the fan still runs at 3700. The CPU temperature is well below the setpoint and should not be running at all.
I have two other NUCs and the fans in those obeys the settings on the Cooling page. The 7i5BNH did also, until I updated the BIOS. I believe the new BIOS introduced a defect.

- Run the exe and select 'Scan'
- Save and include as an attachment in the Intel Community Forum

- Click on the "Start Menu" -> Type "DxDiag" -> Press "Enter" -> Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish loading
- In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click "Save All Information" -> Save the file DxDiag.txt
- Include DxDiag.txt as an attachment in the Intel Community Forum
Thanks for stepping in. I agree that the fan is quiet, but it should not be running at all when the system is cool and idle on the Quiet setting, and indeed the fan did shut off (or slow down to inaudible) before I updated the BIOS (048 initially, now 049.) Another support rep told me that my only remedy was to get the NUC replaced but I think this is pointless (and means my wife is without her PC for potentially weeks.)

I am sorry to hear that the newer BIOS (Version 49) is causing you issues. I ran the same update and my system didn't exhibit any real change.
Could you please try to run a BIOS recovery?

Doing a BIOS restore makes no change - the fan constantly runs. It's interesting that I haven't yet found a Windows utility that will show me the fan speed. I have tried several, including Intel Desktop Utility (which tells me that my NUC is not an Intel motherboard), and none of them show it. The BIOS shows the speed, but that may not relate to speed when Windows is running. I am relying on hearing the fan, which I could not hear with BIOS 45.
Try the following:
- At boot, use F2 to enter BIOS Setup (Visual BIOS).
- Reset the BIOS Configuration by pressing F9 and then Y.
- Make any changes to the BIOS configuration that you absolutely need (boot order, etc.) for your hardware configuration.
- Exit BIOS Setup with a save (you can use F10 and then Y or click on the X and then select Save).
After booting, you *should* (famous last words) see the fan speed control operation return to normal...
The released versions of Intel Desktop Utilities do not run on any of the 5th, 6th or 7th generation NUCs. They were only designed to support Intel's Desktop Board products and only by happenstance did the latest release actually install and work on the 3rd and 4th generation NUCs.
I am working on a capability for temperature, voltage and fan speed monitoring for the BN and AY NUCs. Once I have all of the kinks worked out, I plan to release an appnote that will detail how 3rd-party developers (AIDA64, SpeedFan, HWMonitor, LM-Sensors (for Linux), etc.) can build support into their applications/framework.

Neither HWMonitor or HWiNFO64 (or SpeedFan or AIDA64, for that matter) has support for the ITE IT8987 eSIO (that's my contraction for a Super I/O IC that has an embedded [micro]controller (EC)) or for the custom firmware (including monitoring and fan speed control) that Intel had developed for this EC for the NUC6CAY and NUC7i# BN NUCs.
If you attempt to use any of these applications, you will see it expose the DTS in the processor and perhaps a few other sensors. It will not, however, expose any of the temperature, voltage or fan speed sensors or the fan speed controller that are implemented within this eSIO.
I was be able to test the both utilities on the only NUC I have (i.e. NUC6i5SYH) and it worked and I saw that the fan speed is monitored and the other parameters too (temperatures, clock, voltages, memory timings, etc). I wasn't aware that for NUC6CAY and NUC7i# BN Intel developed custom EC firmware and according to your knowledge the monitoring will not work. Did you have tested this function with HWMonitor or HWiNFO64 ?
Any way, from the jonat and vs2 post (post 14 and 15) the at least fan speed and the temperature are monitored on NUC7i# BN.

The fan seems to stay at a constant 3700RPM (even when I select fanless mode in the BIOS).
I have tried to :
- downgrade my BIOS (i can't flash under 47)
- update via BIOS Recovery (the jumper procedure)
but without success. The CPU is at 42° but the fan is stuck at 3700RPM.
Are you still having this issue? I have not been able to replicate.

If this issue is still being exhibited with BIOS version 50, can you try it again but via BIOS Recovery process?, I am thinking the BIOS may be corrupted and BIOS recovery does a better job.
I'm having exactly the same issue as jonat. I tried all suggested solutions (including the BIOS recovery) with no success.
Besides not speeding down, the fan also seems not to speed up on high CPU load. I'm not sure if this could lead to hardware damages.
Is there anything else (other than not using my new computer and waiting for a BIOS update) wich could solves this issue?
