750GB P4800X OPTANE HHHL Low Performance

Hello,

I just added a 750GB P4800X DC OPTANE to a Dell R720 where I have also a P3700.

The performance that I get at host level es lower than expected:

o4.PNG

At VM level, (Hyper-V) the performance is a lot worst:

I suppose something is wrong with the config but I cannot find what....

All suggestions are appreciated

Hello farero,

Thank you for contacting Intel Communities.

I checked the performance stats for Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4800X Series 750GB, 1/2 Height PCIe x4, 3D XPoint™ and the results you got look pretty good.

The Sequential Read (up to) is 2500 MB/s, you got 2670.4 MB/s

The Sequential Write (up to) is 2200 MB/s, you got 2397.6 MB/s

Information taken from: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/97164/intel-optane-ssd-dc-p4800x-series-750gb-1-2-height-pcie-x4-3d-xpoint.html

Also, all results are based on a "host" machine, no VM involved, in order to get performance recommendations on VMs it would be better to contact the VM software provider you are using.

Finally, for further recommendations or information about the best configuration for performance, you can refer to the performance evaluation guide for the unit you have: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000032738/memory-and-storage/data-center-ssds.html

Thanks Esteban for the reply.

The Operating system is Windows 2016; I will try to get ideas from the Linux performance guide that you have linked.

About the host performance I was expecting better results in the areas that the Optane technology is better than a traditional SSD. The sequential values are correct, the all 4K values are low, they are like a P3700 and they should be superior.

I was expecting at least 2000 MB/s (Q8T8), 500 MB/s (Q32T1), 200 MB/s (Q1T1).

Thank you for the answer, farero.

The results or data that we have tested seems fine compared to the results that you got, as we mentioned before, the sequential reads and writes are good so we are fine on that section.

Then on terms of 4K, the results available done with our benchmarks are random read and writes with 4K which can be seen on the evaluation guide I provided before (results section). Maybe you can review those results with the benchmarks provided in the same document (evaluation guide) and let me know if you see any good or bad scores related to the ones we got. Those results are provided in IOPS, therefore the benchmarks to be used by you would need to be in those.

Also, notice the results can change from one system to the other, that is something you can consider while doing the tests.

At this point everything looks fine, but if you want, you can provide the SMART details from your drive so I can review the drive's health. You can use the Intel® SSD Data Center Tool to extract them, there is a guide on the download page on how to use the tool.

Hello,

I have send by private message the SMART report. It seems that everything is working propely, but Windows or the systems lowers the performance.

I have done more tests of the P4800X (RIGHT) in MB/s and also in IOPS and compared to P3700 (left):

Thank you for the data provided, I reviewed the scores and now I can actually see what you meant on previous posts regarding performance scores.

Please attach the Intel(R) SSU report to your answer so I can get this reviewed.

This is the link to download the tool mentioned:

farero,

After getting your case reviewed the recommendation to be provided is to use the IOmeter from the link and follow the setup guide for performance. This is not exactly for the same SSD but you can use it since it indicates it can work with any other SSD.

Please let me know how it goes.

It has take me some time to do all that tests. Here are the results:

128K Sequential READ: 2670 MBPS (Datasheet: 2500MB/S)

128K Sequential Write: 2404 MBPS (Datasheet: 2200MB/S)

Hello farero,

I got your case reviewed and also performed tests on my end with IOMeter, I am currently working on them and I am sending this update to you because it is required to get some data from your end for further review.

Turns out the SMART logs provided were for a different drive, so it is required to ask for the proper logs again, please check the data below.

How to get the correct index number from the drive

Do the command: isdct.exe show -intelssd, it will look like the one attached, use the orange squares as a reference, you must use the correct drive index.

Correct Index.png

Once you have the correct index, use this command to extract the SMART logs: isdct.exe show –nvmelog smarthealthinfo -intelssd x (use the right index)

Finally, I was requested to ask for the .CSV files you got from IOMeter, you can attach them (read and write) to your answer together with the SMART logs.

Have a nice day,
