FUP4x35HSDK HDD cage question

Recently bought this cage from ebay. Unfortunately, no cables in package

I expected it will have SAS connectors on backplane, but it has what

looks like 4 SATA ports, yet I see elsewhere people (and Intel itself)  talking about SAS

disks with this cage. Are SAS disks supported (maybe through non-standard

SATA cabling)?

Hello Branko,

Thank you for your patience.

The backplane is supported in the Intel® Server Chassis P4304XXSFCN and does support SATA drive only.

For cable, part number location, refer to the section named Configuration Option of the document found at Spares, Parts List, and Configuration Guide for the Intel® Server Board S1200SP, Intel® Server Chassis P4000S, and Intel® Server System R1000SPO Product Families

Here you can find some additional information about the installation:

4x3.5 inch Hot Swap Drive Cage Kit Installation Guide for Intel® Server Chassis P4304XXS

The supported backplane for this family S2600CW is FUP4X35S3HSDK

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi:

FUP4x35HSDK is SAS/SATA backplane. If you want to install SAS you need a RAID controller. Depend on it you would  need  MiniSAS(SFF-8087) or SASHD (SFF-8643 ) to  SATA connector.

Also I recommend to look for I2C cable (HSBP to MAINBOARD) to update HS firmware.

Best regards

Hi and thanks for reply.

I already have SAS controller built in on my S2600CW motherboard.

However, since I know you can connect SATA disks using SAS cable,

but not other way around, I'm curious how SAS disks work in that cage,

if connected through SATA cable?

Hello Branko,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

Could you please let us know where this FUP4x35HSDK is being installed? The model of the server and chassis.

Hi Adrian,

its a custom built server, made mostly from ebayed Intel parts:

1. P4000M Intel server case with 2X750W power supplies and 8XSFF HDD cage

2. S2600CW Intel motherboard taken from (this was hard to find) Kontron CG2300 Carrier Grade Server

lots of ram, additional 10Gbps network card, and uncertain amount and types of storage, plus

additional SAS card in case its needed

Hi Branko:

This backplane support  SAS/SATA but it was used in P4000M chassis (page 121) with S2600CP boards.

FUP4X35S3HSDK is validated one for S2600CW.

Thank you both. I have to highlight difference in your answers, it somewhat explains

how I got confused too

"The backplane is supported in the Intel® Server Chassis P4304XXSFCN and does support SATA drive only. "

"This backplane support  SAS/SATA but it was used in P4000M chassis (page 121) with S2600CP boards."

Just reading the documentation, SAS is mentioned too often
