University of Virginia (UVA), in collaboration with Intel, hosted HooHacks hackathon on March 23-24, 2024. Being the official cloud compute sponsor, Intel provided the participants with access to the Intel® Tiber™ Developer Cloud. Around 720 students participated and nearly 280 new users signed up for Intel Developer Cloud. The attendees got an opportunity to learn about Intel’s resources for AI/ML and GenAI, AI frameworks optimizations and AI development software portfolio. The participants also got an opportunity to learn about Intel’s initiative of bringing ‘AI Everywhere’, Intel® Liftoff Program for AI startups, Intel® Student Ambassador Program and Educator Program. The Liftoff team connected with members of two accelerator programs (Not Yet Ventures and Virginia Entrepreneurship Org) to discuss potential startup-enhancement paths.

What is HooHacks?

HooHacks is one of the top 50 largest collegiate hackathons in the US and the biggest hackathon in Virginia organized by UVA. Interesting project tracks of this year’s hackathon included data science, health, finance, education, sustainability, art and gaming, accessibility and empowerment.

Winner Projects at a Glance

Let us briefly look at the top 3 projects that made the best use of Intel Tiber Developer Cloud at the hackathon:

  1. The 1st-prize winner MosaicHealth AI is a solution that efficiently filters massive personalized medical data from fitness wearables in real-time to help doctors provide critical insights during patient consultations. It thus helps expedite the diagnosis process though generation of comprehensive medical reports. The team extensively utilized Intel Tiber Developer Cloud to build and deploy its solution. It used Intel® Distribution of Modin for accelerated data analysis and  Intel® Extension for PyTorch* for faster inference. It fine-tuned Phi-2 Transformer-based model using Intel Tiber Developer Cloud. Moreover, it leveraged Prediction Guard (an Intel Liftoff member)’s LLM APIs for compliance and reliability.
  2.
  3. The 2nd-prize winner MindRiver is an innovative AI-based meditation and emotional support assistant that prioritizes user privacy and personalization. The web application creates tailored conversations and meditations for each user, securely storing all interactions and personal information in a private database. Leveraging Langchain framework, VectorDB package (powered by Intel’s embeddings), and applying a fine-tuned open-source LLM model on medical dataset on Intel Tiber Developer Cloud, MindRiver offers a unique experience enhanced by neuro-inspired art designed to evoke specific emotions.
  4.
  5. The 3rd-prize winner EcoSense is an AI-powered IoT solution that enhances energy efficiency and sustainability by replacing traditional thermostats with advanced environmental sensors. The system collects data on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), CO2, humidity, and temperature to identify human activities using machine learning algorithms. It thus adjusts room temperature and air quality dynamically for optimal energy consumption and comfort. The team performed model fine-tuning on Intel Tiber Developer Cloud.

The winners were awarded free Intel Tiber Developer Cloud credits for further development of their projects. First-place winning team members also received an AI PC each.

Hands-on Workshops by Intel

Our team members hosted an insightful workshop introducing the attendees to Intel Tiber Developer Cloud, GenAI essentials and Intel’s software optimizations. At another fun workshop, students learnt about how to create custom stickers using images that they generated using stable diffusion notebooks on Intel Tiber Developer Cloud.
