Cyclone II Board: Ethernet without NIOS

Hi, 

 

Has anyone ever tried to use ethernet with this board (http://www.altera.com/products/devkits/altera/kit-nios-2c35.html) without using the NIOS, only with the FPGA? 

 

I am trying it at the moment. There is also a datasheet for the mac + phy chip (http://www.smsc.com/media/downloads_public/data_sheets/91c111.pdf). There is described the typical flow of events for transmit and receive, but I can't understand it. I don't know how to allocate the memory, for example. 

 

Can anyone help?
