Intel and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are pleased to announce the general availability of the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) R7i instance. This compute optimized EC2 custom instance is powered by 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® processors and Intel® Accelerator Engines using Xeon you can trust and AWS’s expansive global footprint.

The in-memory database market alone is expected to register a CAGR of 19% over its forecast period.** The rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) is at a key juncture showing a burst in processing needs and analyzing massive amounts of data in a shorter period of time. Organizations are putting security first as fundamental as their cloud migration continues to increase. And data lakes have become an increasingly common type of architecture revolutionizing how businesses store and analyze their data.

These big data trends among global organizations and the use of memory-intensive workloads are requiring the power of custom cloud computing instances like R7i that can deliver better, automated decision-making that helps to successfully achieve business decision-making objectives.*

A Great Choice for Memory Intensive Workloads and SAP Certified

These instances are SAP certified and are a great choice for all memory-intensive workloads, such as SAP, SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, in-memory databases like SAP HANA, and real time big data analytics like Hadoop and Spark. For SAP, an initial check shows very good ~30% Better SAPS/$ over R6i that organizations can consume now.****

Accelerate Your Big Data and AI with Built-in Accelerators

The R7i instances include four built-in accelerators, each providing acceleration features as follows:

  • Intel® Advanced Matrix Extensions (Intel® AMX) – The Intel® AMX extensions are designed to accelerate machine learning and other compute-intensive workloads that involve matrix operations. It improves the efficiency of these operations by providing specialized hardware instructions and registers tailored for matrix computations. Matrix operations, such as multiplication and convolution, are fundamental building blocks in various computational tasks, especially in machine learning algorithms.
  • Intel® Data Streaming Accelerator (Intel®DSA) – Intel® DSA enhances data processing and analytics capabilities for a wide range of applications and enables developers to harness the full potential of their data-driven workloads. With DSA, you gain access to optimized hardware acceleration that delivers exceptional performance for data-intensive tasks.
  • Intel® In-Memory Analytics Accelerator (Intel® IAA) – This accelerator runs database and analytic workloads, with the potential for greater power efficiency. In-memory compression, decompression, encryption at very high throughput, and a suite of analytics primitives support in-memory databases, open-source databases, and data stores like RocksDB and ClickHouse.
  • Intel® QuickAssist Technology (Intel® QAT) – This accelerator offloads encryption, decryption, and compression, freeing up processor cores and reducing power consumption. It also supports merged compression and encryption in a single data flow. To learn more start at the Intel® QuickAssist Technology Overview.

Advanced Matrix Extensions are available on all sizes of R7i instances. The Intel QAT, Intel IAA, and Intel DSA accelerators will be available on the r7i.metal-24xl and r7i.metal-48xl instances.

Lower TCO/Flexibility/Choice for Your Solution

R7i instances deliver up to 15% better price performance than R6i instances. R7i instances also offer up to 1.5x more vCPUs and memory than R6i instance, with up to 192 vCPUs and 1,536 GiB of memory that you can use to consolidate workloads on fewer instances.***

R7i instances offer larger instance sizes, up to 48xlarge, and the latest DDR5 memory. In addition, customers can now attach up to 128 EBS volumes to an R7i instance (vs 28 EBS volume attachments on R6i).

R7i instances add to the broadest and deepest selection of EC2 instances on AWS. R7i provides 11 sizes (including 2 bare-metal sizes coming soon: r7i.metal-24xl and r7i.metal-48xl) with varying amounts of vCPU, memory, networking, and storage.

Availability

R7i instances are available in the following AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Ireland, Stockholm, Spain).

With the launch of the new R7i instance by Intel and AWS, businesses and partners in the big data and in-memory database analytics computing community can address their high performance, efficiency, TCO and transformation demands for the future.
