Intel and Dell Technologies Showcase Urban Innovation at Smart City Expo 2025
Intel and Dell jointly participated as Diamond Sponsors at Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025, held September 17-19 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. Drawing more than 10,000 participants, this first regional edition of the world’s leading urban innovation event convened technology executives, government leaders, and ecosystem partners to examine solutions driving smarter, more connected cities. Across the event, the collaboration delivered strong presence and engagement including a joint speakership session, several panel discussions, demos from booth partners, booth theater sessions, ecosystem meetings with city councils, and a booth tour by the Malaysia Prime Minister and Digital Minister. Together, these efforts highlighted how Intel and Dell are shaping smarter, more connected cities.
On the AI Main Stage with Intel and Dell
Intel’s presence extended beyond the exhibition hall with two featured presentations and a panel at the Smart City Main Event Hall. Led by Renu Navale, David Pan, and Eric Chan, the discussions explored how cities can harness AI to enhance urban services, infrastructure, and citizen engagement in collaboration with ecosystem partners, global technology leaders, and city mayors.
In a joint speakership session, “Laying the Foundation of an AI-Accelerated Urban Future,” Intel VP, Renu Navale and Dell General Manager, Nam Guan Ng highlighted the evolution of AI from predictive to generative to agentic, where AI autonomously acts, reasons, and adapts. They showed how AI Cities can improve safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency while driving new revenue opportunities. The session outlined the three stages of AI transformation: today’s AI Co-Pilots that augment tasks and boost productivity, emerging AI Agents that automate workflows, and future AI Functions that will enable complex automation.
Renu also addressed the challenges facing AI Cities, from diverse environments and resource constraints to security vulnerabilities and integration complexity. She emphasized that modern urban infrastructure must balance physical and digital investments, cost, power, and performance, while leveraging ecosystem collaboration. Together, Intel, Dell, and partners are working with cities to deliver solutions that improve services, increase sustainability, enhance operational efficiency, and drive economic growth.
In the panel “Edge AI for Critical Infrastructure: Building the Cognitive Core of Future Urban Ecosystems,” Intel APJ General Manager of Video & AI Cities David Pan moderated a discussion with the Malaysia Penang City Council (MBPP), System Integrator SNS, and Dell. The panel addressed the critical challenges cities face in implementing Edge AI cognitive cores, demonstrating ROI aligned with mayoral priorities such as economic development, carbon reduction, and public safety; designing robust security frameworks to prevent compromised edge nodes and poisoned data; ensuring algorithmic transparency so citizens can query and trust autonomous decisions; and exploring innovative public-private partnerships and outcome-based financing models to fund sustainable city-wide Edge AI networks.
In the panel, “Digital Twin Cities: Governance in Simulated Environments,” Intel VP Eric WP Chan highlighted how cities can responsibly deploy scalable edge infrastructure as the foundation for digital twins. He showcased Intel SceneScape, which transforms sensor data into real-time digital twins while safeguarding privacy and security and explained how edge computing ensures low-latency simulations for complex urban environments. He discussed Intel’s technical innovations, including Core Ultra processors with AI acceleration, discrete GPUs, TCC and TSN for real-time performance, OpenVINO for AI inference, and Metro AI Suites, and their role in enabling traffic management and enhanced security. Real-world examples include deployments with Graffiquo in Malaysia and Network Optix in Peachtree Corners, demonstrating 3D object detection and traffic safety improvements without relying on the cloud.
Collaborative Booth Experience
The Intel-Dell collaboration booth was a standout attraction, featuring nine interactive demo stations showing how we’ve moved beyond the lab and into real-world deployment. Powered by Intel edge AI solutions, including the Metro AI Suite, the demos highlighted real-world applications of AI in smart city environments. From intelligent traffic management and predictive maintenance to public safety and energy optimization, each demo illustrated how AI and edge computing are driving efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in urban infrastructure.
These demos were brought to life through ecosystem partnerships, showcasing diverse use cases built on Intel’s compute technologies and Dell’s scalable infrastructure.
