ECC and Core i7-3612QE (3rd gen)

Hello,

I'm working on Intel 3rd gen CPUs, and I humbly ask for clarification about ECC memory.

I used to work on 3rd gen desktop CPUs, and recently joined the embedded world.

Currently, I am trying to enable the ECC functionalities on an Intel Core i7-3612QE.

( http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/3rd-gen-core-family-mobile-vol-2-datasheet.html Mobile 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ Processor Family: Datasheet, Vol. 2 )

However, I do not find the functions I was used to when controlling ECC functionalities on Desktop 3rd Gen CPUs (such as ECC status registers).

Are there specifics or documentation about embedded CPUs that I missed ?

Many thanks !

Hello, Tweety:

Thanks for your update.

You are correct based on the information stated on page 4 of the http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/platform-briefs/3rd-gen-core-mobile-chipset-platform-brief.pdf 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ and Intel® Celeron® Processors with Mobile Intel® HM76/QM77 Chipsets Formerly Chief River (Ivy Bridge + Panther Point) Platform Brief.

Due to this fact, the information that may help is stated at the https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/secure/intelligent-systems/privileged/mobile-3rd-gen-core-eds-addendum.html Mobile 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family (ECC Processor) External Design Specification (EDS) Addendum document # 465308. From there you can request an upgrade.

We hope that this information may help you.

Hello, Tweety:

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

It is important to let you know that the ECC memory is unlisted as supported by the Intel Core i7-3612QE as is stated in sections 1.2.1 and 2.1.1; on pages 13 and 25 of the http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/3rd-gen-core-family-mobile-vol-1-datasheet.pdf Mobile 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family, Mobile Intel® Pentium® Processor Family, and Mobile Intel® Celeron® Processor Family Datasheet, Volume 1 of 2 document # 326768.

We hope that this information may help you.

Hello Carlos,

Thanks for your fast answer !

Yep, I did read on the mobile datasheet that ECC memory was not suported.

However, on Intel's ARK website, the Intel Core i7-3612QE is said to support ECC memory.

( http://ark.intel.com/products/65710/Intel-Core-i7-3612QE-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz Intel® Core™ i7-3612QE Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz) Product Specifications )

I was pretty confused about this and asked about the ECC memory on Intel Corporation forum

( https://communities.intel.com/message/467230 ECC and Core i7-3612QE (3rd gen) |Intel Communities )

It seems ECC should be suported, but some special means are necessary.

Thus explaining my question about embedded specifics and ECC.

So, just to be sure before digging more, the Intel Core i7-3612QE does not support ECC memory, right ?

Thanks again !
