Hot swap (hot plugging) doesn't work

On my new Dell Precision T5860 I have configured the hard drives in JBOD mode in UEFI (F12) because I don't want to use RAID. I also set the SATA mode to AHCI/NVMe under F2 in the UEFI. Two SATA hard drives are installed in the two open FlexBays. Both drives are listed without errors in the disk management. Unfortunately, I can't separate the hard drives in File Explorer or via the taskbar.

The latest updates for Windows and the firmware for the BIOS are installed.

Does anyone have an idea as to what this could be?

It is like the drives might be combined or configured in a way that Windows treats them as a single entity, potentially through a software-based volume or spanning configuration. Here are a few steps you can check:

  1. Check Disk Management:

    • Go to Disk Management (press Win + X and select "Disk Management").
    • Ensure that each drive is listed separately and check if they are part of any combined volumes (such as Spanned or Striped). If they are, you will need to break the volume and reformat them as separate drives if that’s your goal.
  2. Confirm JBOD Configuration:

    • Even though JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) is configured in UEFI, ensure that no RAID or spanning is being applied by any other software, such as Intel’s Rapid Storage Technology or any third-party disk management software.
  3. Verify Drive Letters:

    • In Disk Management, right-click each drive and verify that each one has a unique drive letter assigned. If not, you can manually assign a letter to each drive through this interface.
  4. AHCI/NVMe Settings:

    • Your AHCI/NVMe settings in UEFI should be correct, but you might want to double-check if there are any related settings that could impact drive visibility.
  5. BIOS/UEFI Settings:

    • Recheck your UEFI settings to ensure nothing is inadvertently grouping the drives together.

If the drives are correctly separated in Disk Management but still not visible separately in File Explorer, it may be a driver or software issue. You can try updating the chipset or SATA drivers from Dell’s support site to see if that resolves the issue.

[If you find any Intel driver you might need, download and save it now.]
