Constantly flipping between different graphics drivers won't physically harm the laptop hardware, but the conflicting effect on the system can definitely come into play after a certain period of time. It is advised to use proper uninstall utilities (DDU, for example) when rolling back.

Often when it comes to intergrated graphics or a simular gpu, if not highend, it is windows update that pushes it forward. refreshing to the latest driver since, labtop are not desktop highend, it still has level of detail to be met.  (system32 opengl)

As it comes to old drivers, the results of the old driver wich was the standard for a certain time, it is that certain as to how it functions.
How to ask others what the best possible driver for your specific GPU, propose it while googling.

The old Nvidia 1080 Ti is a excellent videocard example asnwering to your question: with the best drivers coming from 2022, later drivers having a degrading performance, the old remain driver remains the same to the standard.
