Clock Watchdog timeout

Hi, I got a new gaming PC a few days ago, it has an Intel Core Ultra 9 285k. My problem is that almost every time I start a game, I get the error message: clock watchdog timeout 0x101. What can I do about this? I didn't buy such a powerful PC for nothing. Now I just can't play anything because this problem keeps happening. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Dan_ny,

Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Community. The Clock Watchdog Timeout (0x101) error usually means there’s something deeper going on in the system, and I’m here to help you sort it out. To make sure we’re troubleshooting this the right way, could you share a few more details for me?

  • Does the issue occur with every game, or only specific titles?
  • Have you noticed the system freezing or stuttering before the error appears, or does it crash instantly?
  • Are all system drivers, especially chipset, graphics, and BIOS, fully updated to the latest versions from your motherboard or system manufacturer?
  • Is the processor running at default settings, or is any form of overclocking (CPU, memory, or XMP) currently enabled?

  • What motherboard model and BIOS version are you using with your Core Ultra 9 285K?
  • Have you recently checked your cooling setup and temperatures during gameplay?
  • Have you noticed any visible or physical damage to the processor? For instance, bent pins or signs of wear and tear
  • What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far to fix this issue? This will help me avoid recommending redundant actions and focus on the most effective next steps.

I apologize for the number of questions, but sometimes pinpointing the cause requires exploring various factors.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

I just tested it with two games. Yesterday I was able to play one without any problems, but with the other, it happened after about 10 minutes. A few days before that, it always happened after about 2 minutes with both games.

It doesn't stutter; it just suddenly freezes, and then that's it. I'm not sure if the chipset is up to date; I'm not sure how to update it. The graphics card is definitely updated, but I'm not sure about the BIOS. I did all the updates right after I got the PC.

The processor and everything else is running at default settings; nothing has been changed.

My motherboard is an MS-B9211, and the BIOS version is the latest one I can get from MSI. I've already checked that.

I haven't noticed any high temperatures or damage.

Until just now, I hadn't done anything because I wasn't sure what the right thing to do was.

So that CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (0x101) error basically means one of your CPU cores stops responding for a moment. No warning, no stutter it just dips out and the system freezes. Annoying as hell, especially on brand-new hardware.

The best move now is to update your chipset and Intel ME drivers from the MSI support page, then double-check (and even reinstall) the latest BIOS for your MS-B9211 board to make sure the CPU microcode is fully up to date. After that, reset your BIOS to factory defaults just in case any auto-overclock or hidden tuning got enabled, and make sure Windows is running on either Balanced or High Performance instead of a custom profile. Once that’s done, try launching your games again and see if the behavior changes, since the timing of the crash jumping from 2 minutes to 10 minutes means we need to test step-by-step. If the issue keeps popping up, report and file a warranty to this site so intel will see it.
