Hi,
i bought a new laptop a few weeks ago, asus expertbook running 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1235U. with the default intel iris xe gpu.
the max screen resolution capability is 1920*1080. i have a separate pc monitor PHL 288E2 that can run 4k display, and for some reason i can't seem to change the resolution to a higher resolution than 1920*1080.
I've already tried downloading and installing drivers for the intel iris xe gpu, drivers for the monitor itself. and i've also tried switching between a few HDMI cables (2.0 and above).
the thing is i can see in intel's graphic command center that the device is compatible for 4k display but the wanted 3840*2160 option just doesn't appear in the windows system settings.
please see the attached screenshots from intel's graphic command center.
i would love any advise on how to solve this issue.

As you can see here, the 12th Gen Intel Core U-series processor basically features an HDMI 2.0b interface (18 Gbps bandwidth).
According to ASUS’ specifications, the HDMI port on this particular laptop is only version 1.4 (9 Gbps):
Although this would theoretically also enable 4K, the common reality is that with HDMI 1.4 the resolution is limited to 1080p Full HD. Philips E-line 288E2 monitor also features a DisplayPort connector.
The recommendation would therefore be to connect the monitor via an USB-C/Thunderbolt > DisplayPort cable (example).
If you prefer HDMI to eventually connect the laptop to a 4K TV, I can recommend this solution:
Product | Connection | Chip Type | Current Firmware |
|
USB-C > HDMI 2.1 FRL | VMM7100 | 7.02.120 |
This cable contains the Synaptics VMM7100 protocol converter chip. It can provide 4K @ 120Hz HDR 10-bit Color Depth on HDMI connector site by transforming DisplayPort HBR3 video and audio including Dolby Atmos/DTS:X signaling to HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) 40 Gbps suitable for modern HDMI 2.1 TV sets. Please note that this product may arrive with older firmware than mentioned. If it is not working correctly, a firmware update can be done through Microsoft Windows when the product is plugged. Cable Matters provide updates on their website.
