Breaking RAID1

I plan to upgrade my OS and would like to break my RAID 1 setup first such that I make the changes to the OS on one drive while retaining the other drive as is so that I can revert to it if necessary. The option ROM told me that I couldn't break up the array without losing data on the disk. If I don't break up the array, but instead just physically disconnect one drive, I'm not sure what will happen when I attempt to reconnect it.
