Hello Klas:

To insert the SSU file, just save it as any other file, and send it as an attachment.

These are some updates of the lab:

The resolution I used is: 3840x2160

Driver: 20.19.15.4463

Intel® Iris™ Graphics 540

I test the video on both players, Pot Player and MPC-HC Player, and I got the problem of the video stuttering and getting stuck at 1:30.

Also, I used VLC and Windows® media player, on VLC did not work at all, and on WMP, it works fine, but it also gets stuck at 1:30, the main difference is that on WMP after a second it keeps working fine, on the other players it gets stuck and it does not work anymore.

I downloaded more 4K videos from the following web site, and they all work fine with all the players, the same video you gave us is on that page, and it has the same behavior on all the players, that is why we thing the video itself might be the problem:

I don't know how you did the test but on PotPlayer on that video: Samsung_UHD_Soccer_Barcelona_Atletico_Madrid.ts my CPU has 0% usage, that means all work was done by the igpu HD 530... Even if I have lower resolution, I don't think that on a 4k monitor the CPU will be fully used.

These tests are a total mistery to me because, on a higher performance video card then mine, should work better ...

Hello Klas:

I just wanted to let you know that I tested the video again this time on a laptop that has the Intel® i7-4702HQ processor, that works with the same version of graphics that your processor, which is Intel® HD Graphics 4600,

I used Pot Player, MPC-HC Player and VLC player and the video actually doesn't work at all, I used a 4K monitor as well and I got the same results.

I installed the latest graphic driver version: 15.40.25.4463

The video works with Windows® application Movies and TV, but also it is stuttering and getting stuck.

The resolution is: 3200X1800.

So, it seems to be the Ultra HD video will not work properly with HD Graphics 4600.

The problem happens with both:

Now, did you try to play any of the videos that I mentioned previously?

http://4ksamples.com/ http://4ksamples.com/

I tried a video from Costa Rica 4K videos and it work just fine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8U

I download it and the resolution of it is: 3840X2160.

Also, to further assist you we need the information from SSU (System Support Utility).

I don't think anything is wrong with the file, I know people that can play it, its not getting stuck at 1:30, and for me it works to 99% using PotPlayer with Strongene H.265/HEVC decoder, have anyone tried to play it with intel graphic 6200 ? that one has hevc hardware support, and thats the problem I think, the 4600 cant handle all 50fps or 60fps hevc clips, I reencoded the fotboll clip to x264 codec still 2160p 50fps and an even higher bitrate and it plays 100% perfect

Hello Klas:

Thank you very much for your feedback and for the SSU file, that information is very useful for us, in case we get a similar scenario.

In regard to the problem with the Ultra HD video, I am glad to hear that finally you were able to find the specific settings to play the video properly, without stuttering or getting stuck, using the Pot Player, and based on that, it this case it seems the video is actually just fine.

Using PotPlayer with Strongene H.265/HEVC decoder works 99% stutter free, but not this 2 clips, the picture gets nuts when playing them, anyone know how to make it work with PotPlayer and Strongene H.265/HEVC decoder ???

You can't make the work with Strongene, as that decoder doesn't know 10bit decoding, and those videos are 10bit ... Only way is to use decoders in PotPlayer or try MPC-BE : https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/files/MPC-BE/Nightly%20Builds%20%28from%20svn%20trunk%29/ MPC-BE - Browse /MPC-BE/Nightly Builds (from svn trunk) at SourceForge.net

The sony video is 10 bit not the tennis clip, but I think the tennis clip is corrupt, I can play other 10 bit clips 99% perfect, could it be the HDR thing?

Ok, I tested that video and it has little image problems in some points but it is working from the begining to the end with CPU max 2%

I play the tennis clip fine with MPC-HC (Little corrupted here and there) about 40% CPU use, but you cant compare yours 1080p monitor??? to a full 4k, all clips play 100% perfect at 1080p except the "Sony_4K_HDR_Camp" that stutters a little

On skylake all 8bit clips don't use CPU at all for decoding. They use only GPU. MPC-BE is different and better then MPC-HC.

Hello:

I just wanted to add some comments to the information provided from different peeers on this thread in regard to playing Ultra HD videos, or any other type of video.

Basically, to be able to play them it will depend on the preferences you choose on the specific player that you are using.

Depending on the quality of the video, in this case Ultra HD, you need to choose different preferences and configurations, for example enabling HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) or H.265 for 6th generation Skylake processors, and also enabling AVC (Advanced Video Coding) or H.264 for 4th generation Haswell and 5th generation Broadwell processors.

Thanks to all the peers participating on this thread for all the information provided.

If you have problem playing any other video, please let us know, we will be more than glad to assist you with that, and I hope all the information on this thread was useful for you.

@all

Skylake has full hardware fixed-function HEVC 8bit decoding capability, allowing the processor to off-load the whole decoding process to that specific HW inside its GPU.

Video Players like MPC-HC and PotPlayer can certainly utilize this piece of HW in order to achieve very low CPU usage while decoding 4K HEVC 8bit with ease.

Older processors from Intel like Haswell support HEVC 8bit hybrid decoding, which means they use a portion of that fixed-function HW along with CPU.

The result is - as you can clearly see - insufficient in most of the 4K HEVC 8bit clips.

Note that for 10bit HEVC clips, even Skylake supports hybrid decoding and it's exactly the same case like Haswell for HEVC 8bit clips

I've tried many video players, and the only one that plays the smoothest with lowest cpu and gpu use is Windows 10's Movies and TV app.

mpc, vlc, and others stutter like hell on skylake i7 6700hq

Its most likely my graphic thats not powerful enough, I tried Everything and the best way to play it is using PotPlayer with Strongene H.265/HEVC decoder, then it works

Hi KlasBell,

I tried to use the x64 codec, you gave the link, but the image is unusable. There are pixelated squares allover with it. I use PotPlayer codec and it uses hardware decoding capabilities of the igpu. Even on 10 bit videos it uses igpu first then a part of the CPU.

Try to use all recommended codecs and use DXVA and see how much the CPU is utilized.

Ronin!

I think your CPU has hevc hardware decoding capabilities, but mine not,

With PotPlayer and Strongene H.265/HEVC decoder I can play most clips from the site 99% perfect ,but the Sony_4K_HDR_Camp clip gets pixelated and strange,

wow potplayer is nice. comparable to windows 10 movies & tv.

very low cpu resources, plus a lot of features of vlc player.

vlc player always had high cpu usage even with hardware decoding.

Strongene HEVC decoder doesn't support 10 bit output - only 8 bit - although it can decode 10 bit HEVC clips.

It's not the most robust HEVC decoder, but certainly is one of the fastest.

I would suggest LAV Video x64 inside latest MPC-HC nightly build, but using vanilla EVR renderer and not the default EVR-CP, which drops the performance a little.

LAV Video x64 can decode 10bit HEVC and output 10 bit HEVC too.
