Connector type is showing DisplayPort instead of HDMI and refresh rate options are limited.

I have this problem since I bought the monitor last July. The monitor supports up to 144hz using HDMI, which I tested on my pc and my brother's. I'm wondering why it is showing DisplayPort connection type instead of HDMI and my I can't set the resolution higher than 60hz. I tried using CRU(Custom Resolution Utility) and found out that I can manually set the refresh rate as long as the pixel clock doesn't exceed 297mhz, which is HDMI 1.4 speed.

My guess is that intel driver is not properly detecting HDMI 2.0 connection so I tried using linux and everything is working as intended there 1440p 144hz and all.

Is this a common issue with Intel Iris Xe? Is there a known fix to this?

Interesting

in the system information I see

System Type:"x64-based PC"
- "Display"
     Intel ® Graphics Driver Version:"27.20.100.9316"
       - "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630"

         Driver Provider:"Intel Corporation"
         Driver Version:"31.0.101.2115"

driver version is mentioned twice. under "Display" and then below under "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630". and versions are different.

I see guy here has a similar issue "Black screen after installing intel graphics driver"

i5-8500

HDMI

UHD 630

Black Screen

I switched to SAfe Mode

Used Display Driver Uninstaller to uninstall Intel drivers

In Safe mode I've installed driver version 31.0.101.2125

rebooted

Nothing. HDMI Screen is still black and is not even blinking. No signal. No video to HDMI screen no audio to it. DsiplayPort Monitor is workign like a charm

Your device is an Asus VivoMini VC65-C1.

ASUS officially provides this driver:
Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver V23.20.16.4974

I'm surprised that ASUS is talking about "Full-HD" here. That would be a maximum of 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz, which the monitor explicitly supports according to the diagnostic data you attached.

  • Does the HDMI connected monitor work properly with this resolution?
  • Are you really sure that you were previously using the monitor with the higher resolution or maybe you were always using the lower one?

Note: What a video port can do depends not only on the graphics integrated in the processor, but also on which components the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM = ASUS in this case) uses for the path from the processor to the connector. This could also explain why the connector type is shown as "DisplayPort" in the diagnostics. As @n_scott_pearson said, using an LSPCON can cause this. But that is certainly not the case here. The native HDMI 1.4 interface of the processor would show up as "HDMI" in the diagnostics. ASUS may have done something else here.

To finally clarify the capabilities of the HDMI port, you would have to contact ASUS.

Hi, MUC!

thanks for keeping my hope that problem can be solved. Yes I was using Monitor with HDMI port with the recommended resolution 2560 x 1440. I purchased two identical monitors in March to have expanded desktop with same resolution on both monitors for my work. It worked perfectly till Aug.

In Windows 11 there is a history of updates, and what I see in the history that on Aug. 6 some Intel Graphics Experience was installed silently on usual Thursday update by Windows update when I was away from home. That's exactly the date when HDMI Monitor started briefly going black for a moment. Then in teh course of next days Aug. 10, Aug.11, Aug.12 I was struggling with it and now it is black completely. I will try now the ASUS drivers that you recommended and will report the results.

If the HDMI connected display started flickering during your efforts and now doesn't display anything at all, I think it's likely that there's a hardware defect.

If you want to keep the ASUS device, here is a suggestion how you can run the second monitor at least at 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz.

thanks for your help! Yes I suspect there is problem with hardware because even Ubuntu Linux is not able to make HDMI Monitor work. So it is not problem of Windows 11, driver or some setting. Yes, I was thinking about using such device that uses some other port-to-HDMI. Thanks for your help! Kudos to you!
