Hi,
My system specs are:
Cpu: Ryzen 7 5700x
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550mk
I recently bought a gunnir intel arc a770 and i am experienceing high idle power draw around 44-50w while doing nothing. I only have one 1080p 100hz monitor. I tried these instructions here:https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000092564/graphics.html
But it doesnt work and i am still experiencing it.
And the gpu temperature stays around 50-55C temperature. at idle
How can i fix this?

Hi, Apurbo.

Thank you for posting in our Community and for sharing your system specs and detailing the issue. I understand that you're experiencing high idle power draw and elevated idle temperatures with your Gunnir Intel Arc A770. Let’s explore some potential fixes. Have you made any changes to the power settings in your operating system, such as adjusting the power plan to "Balanced" or "Power Saver"? Are there any background processes or applications running that could be affecting GPU usage, even when the system is idle? Have you checked Task Manager for unusual processes? Have you tried testing the GPU in a different system to see if the issue persists, or is it isolated to your current setup?

These questions will help pinpoint whether the issue is related to the system configuration, drivers, settings, or potential hardware factors.

Have a nice day!

Hi Von,

Thank you for your response and guidance.

  • Power Settings: I've tried both "Balanced" and "Power Saver" power plans, but the idle power consumption and temperatures remain high.
  • Background Processes: I've checked Task Manager for any unusual processes, but couldn't find anything significantly impacting GPU usage at idle.
  • Testing in Different System: Unfortunately, I don't have access to another system to test the GPU in. This computer is my first computer that I built before that I had a OEM pc.

I've also reinstalled the GPU drivers, but the issue persists. Is there anything else that could be done to fix this issue?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi, Apurbo.

While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without further investigation, the persistent crashes and the apparent improvement after disabling Turbo Boost suggest a potential hardware issue.

I do not have an answer at this moment but I’ll investigate it and contact you back as soon as possible.

Hi, von.
Thanks for your reply but what are you talking about? I dont have any crashes and also didnt find any settings called turbo boost. I am just experiencing high idle power draw around 44-50W. The idle temperature is also quite high. Its always around 55C or higher. I just want a fix for this issue. So if you find any soultion please let me know.
Thanks again and hoping to hear from you soon.

Hello, Apurbo.

I appreciate your patience and I apologize for any confusion. To further troubleshoot the issue, I would like to gather some information.

Kindly provide the SSU logs to check the system configuration and driver versions installed on your computer. What is the usual temperature when the system is not in an idle state? Also, when did the issue start? Did it start occurring right out of the box?

Additionally, once we have this information, we can better understand your system's configuration and provide more targeted solutions to address the high idle power draw and temperature issues.

Best regards,

Hi Von,

The Usual temperature of intel arc A770 is around 65-75 degree Celsius under load(while gaming). The High idle power consumption issue was there right out of the box. I have attached the SSU logs here.

Please reply soon.

Best regards,

Apurbo

Hi Von,
I hope you're doing well. I wanted to check in regarding the SSU logs I provided for troubleshooting the high idle power consumption on my Intel Arc A770. I understand these cases can take time to analyze, but I wanted to ask if there’s an estimated timeline for when I might hear back from you.
If there’s any additional information or testing I can perform on my end to expedite the process, please let me know. I am happy to assist however I can.
Thank you again for your support, and I look forward to your reply.
Best regards,

Hello Apurbo,

I understand that you're seeking an update on the issue you're experiencing. I would like to inform you that we are still conducting tests and investigations, as we have tried various settings to observe any changes in performance. In the meantime, could you please try the following steps:

1. Enable PCIE ASPM in the BIOS.

2. Set the PCIE ASPM to L1 in the BIOS.

3. Configure Windows to 'Power Saver' in Control Panel -> Power Options.

Please let us know the results, and if possible, share a screenshot so we can better visualize the situation.

Best regards,

Hi Norman,

Thank you for your previous response.  As you suggested, I have set the PCIe ASPM mode to L1 in the BIOS and selected the Power Saver power plan in Windows. Unfortunately, these changes have not resolved the high idle power consumption on the card.

I have attached screenshots of my current BIOS and power settings for your review. I would greatly appreciate any further assistance you can provide in troubleshooting this matter.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Sincerely,

Apurbo

Hello Apurbo,

Thank you for the update and for following the suggestions. I appreciate you providing the screenshots of your current BIOS and power settings; I’ll review them closely.

Given that the issue persists despite adjusting the PCIe ASPM mode and power plan, we may need to explore other potential causes for the high idle power consumption.

I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Hello

I was looking at your case and tested with different A770 cards (not Gunnir). In all cases, I was able to achieve low idle power with the suggested configuration, going from 45 W - 50W to 5 W -10 W for 1080p at 100Hz.

I aslo tested one Gunnir A380 and one AsRock A380, both drawing between 15 W and 20 W, depending on the windows PCI power setting (Off/Maximum saving).

After reviewing your system report, I noticed your motherboard is a Gigabyte B550M K (BIOS up to date). I'm not familiar with that motherboard's BIOS interface and options, and I wanted to ask you to check something.

In my case, I have MSI Pro Motherboards, and those need three settings to be configured, all related to ASPM:

PCIe Native Power Management [Enabled/Disabled]

Native ASPM [Enabled/Disabled]

PCIe/PCI ASPM Settings --> PEG 0 ASPM [Disabled/L0s/L1/L0sL1] (there are additional lines for PEG1 ASPM and other 7 PCI Express Root Ports with different numberings, all set in L1).

I was thinking if maybe there's a setting not well defined and this makes your card not achieve the low power states? I looked for the user manual but it doesn't come with enough information about these settings.

You also mentioned you only have one 1080p monitor at 100Hz. Is this the only device connected to the card? Any chance you have other devices connected? Are you using straight (HDMI-HDMI or DP-DP) cables or are you using some kind of adapter? Is your monitor connected directly to the card or is there any device in-between? (Like an audio receiver, a capture card, a video switch, etc). If so, try connecting the monitor directly to the card.

Has this been always like this or do you know if this started happening after a specific update (either from Windows or the driver itself). Do you know anyone else with the same card model having this problem?
