HD Graphics Problems

My laptop's normal resolution is around 1280x720 since it is hd capable, but is currently set at a "new" highest setting of 1024x768. I cannot adjust my resolution any higher and it now has difficulty playing video in HD. My driver says that it is VGA aupported, but when I download the Intel hd graphics driver update my computer will either say that the update failed or that the driver is up to date. Any suggestions?
