Help, playback of 8K video is only 30fps

My laptop is a ThinkPad P16 i9-13950HX + RTX 4000Ada Laptop configuration with win11 23H2 22631.5039.

I encountered a very strange problem, playing 8K 60Fps video with MPC-HC from K-lite decoding package with MPC Video Render renderer the frame rate is only 30Fps, after switching to high performance (discrete graphics card) in system settings the frame rate is normal.

The video is an 8K 60Fps av1 encoded video downloaded from YouTube, tried to transcode it to H.265 and the problem is still there. I tried to transcode it to H.265 and it still works. I had no problem playing it directly on Chrome with a nuclear graphics card.

Feedback from the developers on K-lite's forums and github suggests that it may be an intel graphics driver issue.

I hope the experienced people in this forum can help me with some solution ideas, and if you need me to provide some other information, you can reply me!

Hello Lex04,

Thank you for reaching out to the community.

To further investigate this issue, could you confirm whether your GPU graphics driver is up to date? If not, I recommend reaching out to Lenovo for the OEM graphics drivers specific to your system.

Once you have installed the OEM drivers, please let me know if the issue persists so we can explore further solutions.

Additionally, after reviewing the specifications of the ThinkPad P16, I couldn't find any indication that 8K resolution is supported.

I installed the latest OEM drivers, my UHD Graphics supports 8K video decoding, and my monitor resolution is 4K 3840 X 2400. With the latest drivers, the problem still exists. I also updated my Windows to the latest version.

Hello Lex04,

Thank you for updating the drivers to the OEM version. To further investigate this issue, I have a few questions to better understand the situation:

  1. Does this issue only occur in MPC-HC from K-Lite?
  2. Have you tried using a different media player?
  3. What is the primary GPU set in your system—NVIDIA or Intel® UHD Graphics?

Your response will help us diagnose the issue more effectively. Looking forward to your reply.

I also tried potplayer and had the same problem. My primary GPU is Intel® UHD Graphics.

Hello Lex04,

After reviewing some of the previous files, It seems you're using the drivers 32.0.101.6314, after looking into your system, the latest drivers released by Lenovo are 32.0.101.6556

Please attempt to update your drivers first using the link here: Lenovo Support

Afterwards please monitor your system and see if the playback still only plays at 30FPS.

Hoping to hear back from you soon!

Best regards,

Thanks, I've been keeping an eye out for new driver releases lately as well. I updated the driver the day before yesterday, but the problem is still not solved.

Thank you for patiently waiting. Please answer the following questions:

  • Are you currently using an external monitor? If yes, please indicate the brand and model
  • How is the monitor connected to the Laptop? Is it with the usage of HDMI or Display Port? What is the make and model of the cable that is used to connect to the laptop?
  • Additionally, I would like to clarify if this was working fine before or was this persistent throughout the entire time?

Please perform a Clean Installation of the latest Graphics Driver, 32.0.101.6734 WHQL Certified (Latest) kindly use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to Uninstall the previous driver.

I look forward to your response!

I have never used an external monitor and I have tried to get the latest drivers from Intel officially for my laptop, but after installing them I restarted the computer with a black screen. So I have to install the latest drivers provided by Lenovo. Every time I install a new driver I use DDU to uninstall and reinstall.

Hello @Lex04,

The integrated GPU (iGPU) in the Intel i9-13950HX processor supports a maximum resolution of 5120 x 3200 at 120Hz. This configuration utilizes a total signal bandwidth of 58.98 Gbps at an 8-bit color depth. However, this bandwidth is insufficient to support the resolution of 8k to 60Hz, which requires 59.72 Gbps at the same color depth. Therefore, the iGPU cannot achieve 8K resolution at 60Hz due to bandwidth limitations.

To validate this calculation, you may use third party tools such as the Kramer AV Bandwidth Calculator. This tool can help in calculating the required graphics bandwidth for different resolutions and refresh rates.

Regarding the ability of native Windows media players and web browsers to play 8K videos, it is advisable for the you to contact your laptop manufacturer. The manufacturer might have implemented upscaling techniques to achieve 8K playback at 50Hz, since it is still supported by the iGPU running only at total signal bandwidth of 49.77 Gbps.

Please refer to your Original Equipment Manufacturer for further information regarding this. With that being said, this thread will no longer be monitored. Kindly post a new question as I will now close this query.
