Hi Erin, I suggest you uninstalling the Intel® HD Graphics driver, restart your system, and install the latest version. You may also try the latest version provided by the http://www.intel.com/support/oems.htm system manufacturer or using a different high quality cable.

If the issue persists please provide the model of the external display, type of cable being used, and the DxDiag report (press Windows* key + R key, type "dxdiag", press OK and then click "Save All Information").
