How to get 2 screens with different resolution?

Could someone please help me solve this issue, I have searched the world wide web to no avail.

I have 2 screens (monitors) set up to my computer. One is plugeed in via VGA (Dell monitor 21') the other is hooked up HDMI (Sony Bravia 40' LCD)

I am trying to get a dual display clone type set-up where I have both screens displaying the main computer with no extended desktop. However the intel display clone forces a resolution change on my LCD to 1280x1024 from its previous 1280x720 previous setting to match the resolution on the monitor.

Is there any way to have both monitors displaying the same thing using different resolutions for each screen?

There isn't very good documentation on this sort of thing since there are so many variables. In any event what you are trying to do is undoubtedly beyond the capabilities of your system. The 21" screen alone is demanding so even a matched cloned system will strain your hardware at any resolution.
