Dear community,
I'm struggling with getting Intel graphics drivers (i915) loaded in the following setup:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (GNU/Linux 6.8.0-35-generic x86_64) - virtualized via Proxmox
- Intel Arc A730M - PCI-passthrough via Proxmox
Initially, I've thought that it will be automatically recognized, but this was not the case. I then followed https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/driver/client/overview.html to install the corresponding drivers.
When I run the following command to verify the driver:
lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A 3 | grep -E "VGA|driver"
I get the following output:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Device [1234:1111] (rev 02)
Kernel driver in use: bochs-drm
00:10.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation DG2 [Arc A730M] [8086:5691] (rev 08)
This looks like the graphics card is correctly recognized, but the i915 drivers are not correctly loaded.
Can someone hint me in the right direction to enable the drivers for the Intel Arc A730M?
Thanks!

Hello mtrinh,
Thank you for posting in Intel Communities. We'll have a look into the issue you encountered attempting to install and enable the Arc drivers. But first, we would like to make a couple of requests to put ourselves in the view of the one who's seeing the issue.
- Is this a laptop system? Can you give us the Make and Model of the device?
- In most cases, laptops come with pre-built Windows. May we ask the reason for your Linux OS?
- Is it okay if we ask for you to run a scan on your Linux system so we can have a view of your system configuration? Here's the link to it. Intel® System Support Utility for the Linux* Operating System
We will be waiting for your response. We may have follow-up questions depending on what we find on the log file. Greatly appreciate your cooperation on this one.
Best regards,

Thanks for your quick answer!
The system I am using is a Minisforum HN2673 Mini PC and I have installed Proxmox VE to use as a multi-purpose virtualization server. One of those VMs requires Hardware Acceleration, which is why I have configured the graphics card to be passed through directly.
Unfortunately, I don‘t have access to the system until beginning of July to run the actual diagnostics in the server. Can the thread be paused until then?
Thanks and kind regards,
Martin

Hello mtrinh,
Thank you for giving us a heads-up regarding your situation. You may open another thread or respond here when you're available or reach out to us via different means (Web Portal, Chat, Phone, or Email). Unfortunately, we will be needing your very system to run tests. Therefore, we will be expecting your message in July.
Best regards,
Francis Ryan P.

I am not creating another thread as mine is exactly the same issue. I have looked at the drivers pages for Arc i915 support for Linux but I cannot find it as officially supported yet.
I have installed Ubuntu 24.04 and so far i had to apply several workaround to get the system to be accessible, link to more details on this forum post https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2500132
The forum post has a name that seems to be actually unrelated to the real underlying issue but there are no explicit messages printed out by the kernel journal as I assume the Ubuntu 24.04 kernel does not get any specific information back from the Intel hardware as it should be.
I have seen a page with Arc drivers but it does not mention support for Ubuntu 24.04 or ARC i915 as far as I can see https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/747008/intel-arc-graphics-driver-ubuntu.html .
I also posted on Launchpad but it has been set to private so I assume you wont be able to ready it, i ll print it as PDF https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/2081636 . The laptop is a asus-zenbook-ux3405ma-14-inch-touchscreen
Can I please ask directions in terms of compatibility and troubleshooting of the problem? Is Intel going to add compatibility or has it already added it?
