Hello community,

I hope someone will be able to help.

I recently upgraded my windows 10 to Windows 11 and am experiencing graphics overlay issues and screen stuttering within various non-native windows apps and my 2nd monitor shows freezes showing temporary ghost/negative images

Hardware OS/Patch/details below

Details below:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz (2.11 GHz)

8.00 GB (7.78 GB usable)

64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Windows 11 Pro

25H2

26200.7840 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.291.0

Graphics Driver details

Inter(R) UHD graphics

Driver date - 06/03/2025

Driver Version - 31.0.101.2135 ( attempted to roll back the driver version to pre windows 11, and hence it is showing the older version, the issue persists in the latest version).

Hello q4qual,

Thank you for posting in Intel community Forum.

For me to better understand and diagnose the issue further, let me ask you to provide detailed responses to the following questions. This information will help me isolate the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward.

 1. What is the brand and model of your system?
 2. Have you also tried to check if the system is compatible to Windows 11 before upgrading?
 3. What are the troubleshooting steps that you tried before?
 4. How did you update the Graphics driver?
 5. For me to review the hardware and the driver installed, please help generate the SSU logs of your system. Kindly refer to the link below for the steps:

How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Hi @Mike_Intel

Thanks for your reply, please find the requested details below.

 1. What is the brand and model of your system?

HP Elitebook 840 G7 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz (2.11 GHz) 8GB

2. Have you also tried to check if the system is compatible to Windows 11 before upgrading?

Yes, it was confirmed

3.What are the troubleshooting steps that you tried before?

1. Rollback the graphics driver version (where it did not have the stuttering/overlay issue in Win 10)

Thanks for the DDU utility link.
I reinstalled the latest driver after running DDU, am afraid it has not made any difference

I will send the screenshots and SSU logs later.

Hello q4qual,

Thank you for the update.

To isolate the issue, please try also the OEM driver from the laptop manufacturer.

Let me explain that there are 2 types of drivers. Intel generic and OEM driver from the manufacturer of the laptop. OEM laptop manufacturers can modify the controllers and to enable those modifications, they need to product their own drivers.

Hi @Mike_Intel

I did another DDU method and followed the HP OEM driver installation as suggested, am aftraid the process suggested does not work. The executable does not run.

I think it is worth adding that windows for some reason windows is automatically updating the graphics driver to

Inter(R) UHD graphics

Driver date - 06/03/2025

Driver Version - 31.0.101.2135

soon after DDU restart, and I made sure the update is done with network connectivty disabled and windows driver update is turned off via group policy and settings however, it keeps rolling back to the above version the moment network connectivity is back on.

I understand this is a known issue within wider community, i.e windows somehow keeps updating the Graphics drivers when connected to the internet, even with settings OFF.

Do you have any other suggestion in your playbook for me to try?

Hello q4qual,

Thank you for the update.

Let me check, have you tried to connect an external monitor to check if the external monitor will have the same issue?

You can try this test to check if this is a hardware issue or not.

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Issue is persistant and tested to reproduce with both inbuilt dispay and external monitor connected via an usb-c doc and direct connection via laptop's HDMI port.

As it appears, this is a known issue post win 11 upgrade, am not sure who takes accountablity

a) OS Vendor - Microsoft

b) Hardware vendor - HP

c) Graphics chip - Intel

and please could you check you knowledge articles to see if there are an windows DWM.exe settings tweak available for this driver? I suspect it is the display buffers that is causing this image ghosting?

Hello q4qual,

Thank you for the update.

Generally, if this issue is found on the laptop's website. You can further check with them since they are the one who validates the compatibility of the OS. We have already tried Intel generic driver and OEM driver but still the same.

Regarding your inquiry about DWM.exe, this is the only link that I found: dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) Produces a Memory Leak with Drivers... but it does not have information on tweaking the driver. Technically speaking, the tweaking of the driver is done by the OEM manufacturer because they need a custom driver for the specification of their system. Intel generic driver is a default driver.

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Hello @HeroS_Intel @Mike_Intel

Unfortunately none of the methods suggested works, including DWM tweaks.

The only option for me is to rollback the driver version to 2024 31.0.101.2130 for 7th-10th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor . which fixes the issues at least for now and hopefully it does not break with next windows update.

You may also note that DDU uninstaller tool and instructions is not try worthy as there is known issue with windows update reverting to the the intel driver when internet connectivity is ON. I suspect this happens on PCs with an upgraded version of Windows 11.

To circumvent this, in my case I had to make Group policy edit and windows registry changes to disable auto-driver update and uninstall and remove the driver files via windows control panel.

Hi,

Thanks for your message.
The issue still persists
I also think it is certain windows application types that triggers this change of state of the driver and the active display state buffer.

In my case, I suspect it is the popular desktop P2P messaging application from Meta that is causing it after a message notification pop-up is displayed. From that point, the computer screen enters this negative window display mode unless I consciously disable at startup

Hi q4qual,

Thank you for the update.

I just want to clarify, if you disable the p2p messaging app in start up. Are you still having this issue?

Or please tell me, if the p2p messaging app is uninstalled, are you getting a smooth display?

If you have any other questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Hi q4qual,

I would like to inform you that since the graphics driver troubleshooting steps (driver updates, rollbacks, DDU reinstalls) didn't resolve the issue and the problem only occurs when this specific third-party application is running.

This indicates the issue lies with how the P2P messaging application interacts with the display system, not with Intel's graphics drivers. Therefore, the app developer (Meta) needs to investigate and fix the compatibility issue between their application and the Windows 11 display environment.

I will be closing this inquiry. If you need further assistance, please submit a new question, as this thread will no longer be monitored.

Best regards,
