Intel UHD 620 1440P & 75hz?

I have a Lenovo Yoga 520-14IKB and just bought a 1440p monitor that supports 75hz at that resolution. I connected it via HDMI (only option) and the refresh rate maxes out at 60hz. How to get 75 Hz?

Hello @Kermit

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

The Intel® UHD Graphics 620 Controller and the graphics driver can display Max Resolution of 4096x2304@60Hz over DisplayPort* (DP) 1.2 or HDMI* 2.0, and 4096x2304@24Hz over HDMI 1.4.

When bandwidth and system configuration allow it, the GPU will display any resolution equal or lower than the Max Resolution supported by the processor that is also supported by the display and the computer. In this scenario, the Intel® Graphics Command Center will show the Display Modes supported by the monitor under the available "Resolution and Refresh rate" drop-down menus. This means that all the components involved in the configuration must support the desired resolution.

We would like to know if you have verified with the computer manufacturer (OEM) Lenovo* if the desired Resolution + Refresh rate is supported through the HDMI* port on the computer? This is since we have seen scenarios where OEM customizations may limit the Max Resolution and bandwidth supported by the system.

If your OEM confirms the desired resolution is supported, please provide us with the following information so we may check this further:

1- Just to make sure, when you said "1440p", do you mean Resolution 2560x1440@75Hz? If not, could you please confirm the exact resolution that you are trying to achieve?

2- We understand this is a new monitor? Is this behavior happening since the first day that you have the monitor? Have you tested the monitor with another computer? Have you tested another 1440p monitor with your computer? Please provide details:

3- Are you using a straight-through connection HDMI-to-HDMI with a single cable to connect the monitor? Or are you using any type of video adapters, converters, or dockings? Please provide details.

4-Report for Intel® Graphics Drivers following the steps on the link. Make sure the monitor is connected to the computer when generating the report.

5- Run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) to gather more details about the system:

  • Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer
  • Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click Next and click Save.
  • Once you have saved the file (.txt file), please attach it to your reply.

To upload and attach a file, use the "Drag and drop here or browse files to attach" option below the response textbox.

Hello Andrew

Ad. 1 I confirm it's about 2560x1440@75Hz.

Ad. 2 I tested this monitor and cable on other computer with GTX670 - works fine

Ad. 3 I use a straight-through connection like in the test on other computer

Hello Kermit

Thank you for your response.

Checking the Graphics report, we noticed that the desired resolution (a.k.a. Supported Mode) 2560 x 1440 (75p Hz) is listed for the display and it is detected by the graphics.

As we previously mentioned, all the components involved in the configuration must support the desired resolution. Just to make sure, could you please confirm if you verified directly with Lenovo* if the HDMI* port on your computer supports the desired resolution 2560x1440 @ 75Hz? Does your computer come with HDMI* 1.4?

We are asking this since setting 2560x1440 @ 75Hz could be possible over HDMI 1.4. However, there are other factors that we don't control that may be pushing the remaining bandwidth percentage that is reserved for overhead and leading to an issue preventing selecting the desired resolution or other display issues (flickering, black screens, etc). Therefore, it is very important to confirm first the capabilities of the computer and the video ports.

We tried to search on the Internet for the computer specifications of your system. However, we get different results from Lenovo* website (either using the Model "81C8" or the SKU "520-14IKB") and we are not sure if those links are actually regarding your system. Also, they don't specify the Max Supported Resolution for HDMI. Please take a look at these links and let us know if one of them is about your system:

In addition, we found a link that seems to match your system specifications and it says that the Max resolution for HDMI is: 1920x1080@60Hz. If that is the case, the problem could be a hardware limitation. Unfoturnely and despite the document may look authentic, it seems it is from a non-Lenovo website but from a third-party website so we are not able to validate this information >> "Yoga* 520 (14") 81C800J1PB".

We would appreciate it if you could confirm the HDMI capabilities of your system and share the feedback with us. You may also share links as a reference.

On a side note, we noticed that the system is running a very old graphics driver (Version: "23.20.16.4973"). Therefore, we would like to recommend the following steps and in case this may help with the behavior:

1- Check if there are drivers or firmware available for your monitor (.inf files). We recommend reviewing with the monitor manufacturer to make sure the software for it is properly installed and up to date.

2- Update the Graphics driver for your system.

Since the driver or software for your Intel® component might have been changed or replaced by the computer manufacturer (OEM) and OEM drivers are handpicked and include customized features and solutions to platform-specific issues, the usual recommendation is to use the OEM driver as the first option.

Please perform a Clean Installation of Intel® Graphics Drivers in Windows* using the latest customized graphics driver available from your Computer Manufacturer website. You may want to contact Lenovo* Support to verify what the proper driver is for your system.

During the process, please make sure all steps are followed, including disconnecting from the Internet and making sure you get to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter before trying to install the graphics driver.

If the behavior persists, as a second option you may repeat the clean installation process and try the latest Intel® generic Graphics DCH Driver Version 30.0.100.9955.

If you have additional inquiries or feedback, please don't hesitate to contact us back.

Hello Kermit

We have not heard back from you so we will proceed to close this thread now. Our final recommendation is to confirm the HDMI capabilities of your system with Lenovo* Support.

If you need any additional information, please submit a new question as this thread will no longer be monitored.
