Need help with Iris 540 driver continually crashing on Surface Pro 4 i7/16/256

I have a brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 4, with an i7 CPU, 256GB SSD, and 16GB RAM. The Iris 540 driver crashes within a couple minutes of bootup, ever single time. I'm not the only one with this issue, acording to the Microsoft support boards. (I know that others are experiencing an issue where the Intel display driver will crash when trying to resume from sleep, but this is not that problem.)

Any of the four Intel Iris 540 display drivers I have found will crash within a couple minutes of bootup during use. To be more clear, the screen goes black and has to be powered off by holding the power button; there is no recovery or error message. The only stable driver I've managed to use is the Microsoft Generic Display Driver, which seems to be doing everything in software, avoiding the Iris chipset altogether.

Is anyone else having this problem, or just me? Did I get bad hardware? My SP4 is an i7/256/16, the model just released on 11/25/2015. Here are the drivers I have tried:

Build Driver date

--------------------

4236 11/20/2015

4236 11/18/2015

4308 10/27/2015

4256 07/17/2015

Here is the output from DXDIAG when the driver is installed, but has not yet crashed: http://pasted.co/98e68195 http://pasted.co/98e68195

I have a thread open on Microsoft's support forums as well, but all they've done so far is to confirm that this is not expected behavior. (Duh!)

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,

Sounds like good news. I would try the beta myself, but how do you install the beta, or do you have a link to where to find it?

When I try to install the beta driver I found, I get a message telling me to use the hardware manufactured driver, og the installation is aborted.

Thanks in advance.

Lars.

Thanks! I just installed the driver in my SurfacePro4 (i7 6650U)

Problems still remain. I get an "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" BSOD when using any GPU accelerated desktop app like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

In illustrator graphic corruptions are visible and it crashes within a minute when zooming in or out.

I already got a replacement model from Microsoft but the problem remains..

Is this a hardware thing or can i count on a driver update that will fix the problem?

Hello Bryce,

Just wanted to update that since the infamous Feb. 17 MS Surface Pro 4 updates, the graphics driver is less stable, both in the version automatically updated by MS and the Intel 15.40.18.4380 Beta version which had worked so well, at least for me, until the Feb. 17 firmware update (which, of course, installed itself, and of which the firmware part cannot be rolled back).

I now get crashes again in DaVinci Resolve 12.3.1 (though definitely not as certainly as back in December 2015), and now even clips in ProRes or DNxHD format also get affected by artifacts and flashing green/red/herringbone stripes. This is both in the MS Feb. 17 update driver and the Intel Beta driver. It appears that the Intel Beta driver is still a bit more stable (i.e., fewer driver crashes overall) compared to the MS Feb. 17 update driver, so I am currently using the Intel Beta driver, but it is certain that it all worked better prior to the Feb. 17 MS firmware update.

Now I don't even know if the graphics driver is all to blame as I'm occasionally getting Power Driver State crashes and BSODs - which ironically the Feb. 17 was supposed to mainly 'fix' (and never seemed to be a problem in the first place in my case). And it seems that many many people are experiencing horrors with this Feb. 17 update which has practically been forced onto SP4 users.

Anyhow, hoping this situation gets fixed soon, as this seemingly uncoordinated effort between MS and Intel is frustrating to say the least from the user experience perspective.

Looking forward to improvements.

Hello Bryce,

Just reporting in to say that the latest beta 15.40.20.4404 appears to solve things for me. In particular, DaVinci Resolve 12.3.2 works fine now (finally!), with all supported video formats showing up without artifacts or corruption, or, crashes.

Now, if only MS would either allow us to revert the firmware to how it was before Feb. 17 or give us a firmware that truly solves the power management problems, we should be clear with a reliable Surface Pro 4. . . At the moment I have to keep remembering to always hibernate and never let the Surface go to sleep as it invariably crashes and reboots if I let it do so.

But the video now, with this latest beta, appears to work!

I'll update if things change.

Thanks.

Hi Unkiray, Bryce,

Thanks for the tip on the new beta drivers.

Good news! This update seems to have solved the BSOD in illustrator too! Dropshadows are now displayed correctly (without artifacts) and i cannot get it to crash anymore. On top of that overall performance in both illustrator and windows seems to have improved!

I'll keep testing this week by starting designing on the surface. Keep you posted......

I too have the surface pro 4 i7 256gb 8gb model and the Microsoft and the Intel beta drivers crash all the time. I play games on it and it runs decently performance wise but I get this horrible bsod error. WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. Every time I play gta v.

I too have a Surface Pro 4 I7 with Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics 540 and the latest updates from Microsoft. I am trying to edit videos with Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2012 under Windows 10 using the new Microsoft dock connected to an external Hanns-G monitor and the display driver crashes repeatedly, then restores itself and then Movie Maker will no longer function and I have to reboot and start Movie Maker again only to have the crash occur again after a few edits.

I realize that Movie maker is really no longer supported by Microsoft but I cannot find anything on the net regarding a reliable replacement for the Surface Pro 4 and am also not sure if it is Movie Maker, the graphics driver or maybe the external monitor. Do I invest in a new monitor and take the risk or new video editing software and take the risk? Seems to me that if the graphics driver is crashing then someone at Intel should be able to tell us what makes their driver so ANGRY! and maybe recommend some software/hardware that will play nice. How are we supposed to know what the hell is going on here? All I can say is that the same version of Movie Maker does not crash my desktop system with Windows 10. That works just fine with all the same updates.

Is this still an area of active development?? It has been very quiet on Intels and Microsofts front about the display issues of the new Surfaces...

I also see the same behaviour. Also replied to the forum post mentioned above on answers.microsoft.com - don't really believe this is a hardware issue.

Any update on this would be appreciated. I am also happy to beta test any pre field test file update.

Have the same problem with my MS Surface Pro 4 8GB / 256 system (Up to date with the 20.19.15.4326 driver) so came here looking for the 20.19.15.4352 driver. I was optimistic that it would be the magic silver bullet but from what I'm reading it is not and we all still have a problem although possible not quite as frequently.

I love it when it works so is there any resolution anywhere in sight? Many of us are past our 30 day return window and are impeded with a faulty / non reliable piece of hardware that appears to have the consensus of a software driver issue.

My machine is i7/8/256 and have the same problem since early Jan. Here is the video I took a month ago: https://youtu.be/rmMOvXpl1-c https://youtu.be/rmMOvXpl1-c

I reinstalled the machine for around 10 times and installed all updates and firmware already. However, no improvement can be seen. In order to use the machine, I have to disable the display card, so no pen, camera can be used.

So far, I found the machine will be off automatically if

1. Using chrome

2. Using edge

3. Do input

Interestingly, the machine has no problem if it is idle. Can Intel and Microsoft response to this problem???

On my new Surface4Pro (i7, 512,16) the Itel Iris 540 driver continuously crashes when I am using grafic intensiv apps live MicrosoftDVD or Polycom-Videoconferencing or Skype Screen Sharing.

After Iris crashes it only take a few seconds until the complete Surface freeces.

This problem seems to be active for a lot of users - why is no one responding from intel or Microsoft and why is the no driver update avaiable?

In this state the surface cannot be used for any kind or buniness work - shame on you guys!

I installed the beta driver, but the problem persists. I'm curious my problem is hardware problem rather than software. Is there any way I can capture the situation of my machine just before it crashes?

I recently purchased a NUC6i5SYK (has iris 540) and updated to the latest graphics driver (15.40.14.4352). I'm not sure if my problem is exactly the same as discussed in here, because my screen doesn't go black - instead it goes a random color (I'm guessing it's the color whatever the mouse cursor is pointing at that moment). However the freezing is the same - it happens randomly, even when I'm simply on my desktop, and only recovers with hard reset. So maybe it's not specific to Surface...

I just installed the new surface pro 4 update. It seems work! And the driver is dated 12/1/2016. I will observe it longer to ensure it is problem free!! Cheers!

Didn't help with my case unfortunately. Can you guide me how to get a dump file? Maybe mine is all another issue...
