Problem, might be graphics card related

I've been playing Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords and have been running into a problem where the game gives me a "Program has stopped responding" message and shuts down upon entering certain areas of the game. Through discussion with members of the game community, I have determined that this problem was common and was the cause of the creation of the "Dantooine Lag Fix" where vertex buffer objects are to be disabled. I have done this fix and continue to have the problem. This leads me to believe that my graphics card is trying to do something with them anyway. Is there a way to force my graphics card to outright ignore vertex buffer objects or possibly any other idea of what this could be?

I have Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset running on Windows Vista 32-bit.
