UK HD freeview stutter HD4000 graphics

Hi,

I am using a BGT3620 and am noticing occasional stuttering in HD freeview channels on Windows Media Center in the UK. It seems to happen a lot in wide panning shots. Watching Formula 1 on the BBC really shows this up. There are several threads discussing this issue with no solution. Recorded live HD shows the same. If I bring up the MCE info (411 then the info button) the frame rate seems to jump form 50hz to 25hz and back causing the stutter. I have switched off all the post processing in the graphics driver (helped a little) and my signal is strong - I live 2 miles from the transmitter. Playback of Blu-ray and HD .mkv files are fine.

System spec:

Intel i3 3225 with HD4000 graphics (latest driver)

Asus H77 based motherboard

Blackgold BGT3620 dual channel HD freeview card

4Gig RAM

1TB WD Green hard drive

Can you help in this? Watching HD Freeview with the the stutter is really annoying.

Thanks

According to other forums, UK Freeview HD uses dynamic field/frame encoding i.e. the frames per second flips between 25 and 50 depending on picture content.

Thank you, let me double check on all this information.

I would like to get a clear idea of the issue or issues being present here.

Just to confirm, the same stutter that you see in UK HD Freeview occurs while playing Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 6 to view Blu-rays?

And that stutter happens when the software you are using jumps from 50hz to 25hz?

Are there any specific steps that we can follow in order to replicate this issue?

Hi,

Sorry, if I made it confusing. My computer only stutters when watching Freeview HD in the UK usually in live broadcasts. Sports show the most. It is the jump from 50hz to 25hz and back again (as shown in the YouTube video I uploaded) that causes the stutter. It almost looks like a frame drop. To replicate, you will need to receive a UK HD broadcast (live or recorded) or have a way for me to upload you one.

This has nothing to do with playing Blu-Ray films or Arcsoft TMT6. It plays fine.

Thank you skutterbob, I am forwarding this now, while I do this, let me know, that jump from 50hz to 25hz is done by MCE itself or the TV? Have you tested using any other media software such as XBMC or anything similar?

Hi,

Yes it does stutter in XBMC as well. If I get the recordered Formula 1 program to show the frame rate, you can see it change in the same way.

I did contact the TV card manufacturer and they said it was down to graphics drivers.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi,

Is there any update on this?

I have a Zotac ID83 with HD4000, TBS 5280 and experience stuttering on UK Freeview HD channels. How bad and how often varies, but definitely only on Freeview HD. Not just sport and panning, even Downton Abby does it

Thanks

Hello everyone,

Just an update on what we have for this problem. Firstly, we have been trying to identify what the issue is, correct me if I am wrong, but it is...

* Freeview* HD UK channels viewed live in Windows* Media Center on Windows* 7 are showing a stuttering issue.

* As per the last video I saw on this, the stutter manifests itself as scrolling lines going from the top down on the screen.

We have a bit of an issue with problems like this, since they are only visible on geographically proprietary services. In this case, we are not in the UK, and therefore do not have direct access to Freeview* HD. This makes it impossible for us to reproduce the problem as it is presented.

What I would like to ask of any users here experiencing the issue - if you have contacted Freeview* in order to get support on this issue, did you do so over the phone or via email? If you have done so via email, please provide me the contact information for the representative you spoke with, so that we may work directly with them.

Thanks,

-Nic

Hi,

I did not see any scrolling lines on screen - just the stutter. The video I posted on Youtube was recorded from the TV using an iPhone, that is why it looks poor. It is the sudden frame rate change from 50hz to 25hz and back that causes the stutter. I will contact freeview for more help.

Thanks

Hi, is there any way of me being able to send/upload an actual recording to you showing the issue? I would try to get a short recording as a full F1 race is nearly two hours.

In my quest to solve it I think I may have come across a fix, it's worked for me and I've been glitch free since.

Hopefully it'll work for other.

Download and run the following program

http://codecguide.com/windows7_preferred_filter_tweaker.htm Codec Guide: Windows 7 Preferred DirectShow Filter Tweak Tool

Under Win7DSFilter Tweaker click on Prefered Decoders. For H.264 and MP4V both 32 and 64bit decoders select LAV video, save and reboot!

You can always reset back to the original settings if needed using the tool.

If you don't see LAV Video install the K-Lite codec pack below

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 10.0.5 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 10.0.5 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 10.0.5 BASIC

I can't say exactly which setting fixed it, googling which codecs UK HD Terrestrial used it was these two so I simply selected them, it's working I'm happy

Hopefully this helps others!

Hi

Thanks for the info - I tried it and I am still getting the stutter. I think it is not as bad as it was before, but still noticeable. There must be a reason why PC TV cards/graphics are showing this issue and dedicated Freeview HD set top boxes and built in TV tuners do not.

I contacted Freeview and they said their help line is not technical enough to give any help! I will try contacting the BBC directly.
