I recently purchased a system that uses the GMA500 chipset, and I was most disappointed to find that the Linux support is terrible! The moblin repository for the GMA500 driver (xf86-video-psb) has not been updated since 2008, and Intel have not provided any updated drivers! The only ones available are only compatible with certain kernels/distros.
Is Intel dropping Linux support for this chipset?

Is it really necessary to update the driver of g500 for Linux, the performance is very terrible, making the system inoperable. The hardware g500 can do much better if the drivers are improved. Please make drivers seriously.

I bought a MSI Wind U110 Eco which runs Atom Z530, the delivered WinXP is updating till death, and when I want to install Linux, I can install Ubuntu, using the PPA driver (http://gma500re.altervista.org/scripts/poulsbo_ppa.sh), but then comes the next Ubuntu update, and my netbook is dead again... Please support YOUR OWN products, give the documenation material to the one that can write drivers ! Make it OPEN !

I can't understand this arguement - every chipset manufacturer has sometimes problems. I find the Intel chips are extraordinary.

Go to your distribution for Linux drivers. Way too many versions of Linux for Intel to write drivers for. Thats why they are supported at the distro level.
Also, see: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010512.htm http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010512.htm
Lets keep only one thread for this issue. /message/85012# 85012 http://communities.intel.com/message/85012# 85012

This is what is called a white wash.

Hello Robert,
I bought a GMA500 enabled netbook and I must tell the experience as user is dissapointing.
I tried several linux distributions: Mandriva, Fedora 12, Ubuntu UNR, Zenwalk, even Arch; Just searching for one that works well with the GMA500 chipset.
As you can se these are not just another extrange Linux disrto. They are main distributions, even in distrowatch.com 4 of them are in the top10 distros
At the end it becomes very frustrating to discover that no one works well yet.
May be the closest one to success is Ubuntu UNR. but even wit that there are several glitches. Having to maually re-install drivers after a kernel update is a pain. Not good at all for non tech users.
I has been an intel fan for years, and my general experience with dozens of machines has been very positive.
But this time, I think Intel took a wrong path. It is really hurting users who loves Linux on intel hardware.
Please intel, do something.
Adrian

With fedora 14 on my netbook, I installed poulsbo drivers and I have native resolution, but awful performance. Too bad Intel never released proper linux drivers for their chip. Next time I buy a PC, I'll be more careful.

What a load of Bullshit. Too many distros? How about you just support the ONE most used distro, Ubuntu? With all of its variants (and millions of users), you would be supporting tens if not hundreds of distros by doing just that. Stop telling everyone to go to their distro, when you know damn well we can not reverse engeneer this without your help (or the makers of this garbage chipset), and only you are in the position to make that happen. How are you going to build your own Linux distro, but leave us in the dark? Consider yourself on notice, because if the Linux community turns its back on you, the way you have on us, most of your future plans involving Meego, and anything Linux related are dead. You need us. You need our community. Get your shit together Intel.

nobody listen you, nearly no support in windows and practically no support in linux. I have gma500 and i know that this driver is junk.
