intel UHD graphics black screen

Hi everyone,

Im in need of someone with more experience than me with computers. I have an older dell 5560 laptop. (11850h, T1200 gpu, 32gb ram) and in normal boot mode, I get a random black screen and frozen laptop. Completely random, it can be before I sign in to 2 minutes after i sign in.

Recently there was an update, which completed successfully. But next day it kept crashing. No matter what I tried. It would go black screen and I had to force shutdown. I managed to get into safe mode which works perfectly fine! so I know it's not hardware issue. I also tried diagnostic startup which also worked perfectly fine. No issues just missing services so it must be driver / service issue. I tried plugging in HDMI to make sure it's not my monitor, nope. Both freeze.

Fed-up I reset the laptop to factory windows (keep no files), I installed windows from laptops recovery partition, it worked.... until I started installing drivers via dell assistant. I then tried windows 11 clean install from another computers image creator (not dell`s version) and same thing, crashed during driver installs. So i reset it once again and created tons of restore points installing driver after driver individually. I landed on intel driver being the culprit. I reset pc once more and installed just intel driver, it crashed.... So i did what everyone else would and installed older version of the driver... it still crashed ! I tried updating / downgrading BIOS, reset bios settings, Im honestly lost. So what Im doing right now that works is in device manager, I disabled intel uhd graphics and its working fine... Not an ideal solution...

Now the annoying part, my system is not creating any minidumps (theyre enabled just not being created), Even viewer is also pointing to intel.... I tried DDU in safe mode, reinstall old and new driver. They all crash. If anyone is able to help me please figure this out I would be very grateful. Thank you

ok so after hours.... I made progress. and potential fix.

Symptom:

  • Random Black screen then complete system freeze (capslock unresponsive)
  • LiveKernelEvent 1A8 ( dxgkrnl!DISPLAYSTATECHECKER::CreateBlackScreenLiveDump)
  • No BSOD, No WHEA, No nvlddmkm errors, No minidump,.
  • Event viewing not logging errors 99% of time. Freeze happened before windows could log anything. Occasionally Intel error.
  • Intel only or Nvidia only enabled in device manager worked. But the moment you enable both, it crashes within seconds.
  • Clean windows installs, dell drivers, bios update / downgrade, ePSA diagnostics all didnt work.

Main breakthrough:

  • Started looking at power state transitioning. Found that some S0 causes issues with Nvidia Optimus switching ( mine was S0, S1,2,3, not available)

FIX:

  • Disable PCI Express Link State Power Management
  • Set Minimum processor sate to 100%

Fully stable now for 5 hours. Sounds like the power state when changing graphics caused all this... Next I will reduce minimum power state and look as to why does one of those 2 causes a full system freeze. But this is enough for anyone else experiencing this to fix and continue using their laptop. I will update if i ever figure out the full issue.
