I have a 7th gen x1 carbon that has a strange issue that I've seen a few people here report, but it seems unresolved. Curious if there has been any progress with this problem.
A few days ago the computer starts booting windows then the screen goes black. Two days of troubleshooting have led me to believe that this is related to the uhd graphics driver. If I roll back the driver to the microsoft basic display driver, the screen works fine. But if I update to any version of the uhd driver (via intel, lenovo, windows update), I get the black screen issue on boot. The computer is still working, and if I plug into an external display, that works just fine. So it's the uhd driver that doesn't work with the internal display.
Things I've tried without success:
-Lenovo diagnostics: all pass
-Reset bios to defaults
-All other updates are current
-Win+Ctrl+Shift+S to reset graphics driver DOES NOT fix it
-DDU to remove all old drivers
-Fresh windows install - works initially, but as soon as the display adapter updates, the screen goes black
-In safe mode the display works and is the only way I am able to roll back the driver without an external display
I've tried the following drivers:
27.20.100.8729 via windows update
30.0.101.1338 via lenovo vantage
31.0.101.2115 via intel update
Yesterday I went through the following process:
-Install uhd driver via windows update -> screen black but external screen works
-Roll back to microsoft basic driver -> internal screen works again
-Update uhd via lenovo -> screen black but external works
-Roll back to microsoft basic again -> internal screen works
-Update uhd via intel -> screen black but external works
The laptop seems to work just fine with the microsoft basic display driver, but then I cannot use an external display which I require on a regular basis.
Thanks in advance.

Hello blimp_pilot,
Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities. I see you are having an issue with the built-in display no matter the driver you use.
In this case, based on your troubleshooting and the fact that your laptop works fine when connecting an external display, this issue looks linked to the laptop screen. Bear in mind that our drivers are generic and the drivers from your laptop manufacturer are customized for your specific laptop model.
I recommend you get in contact with Lenovo so they can run the tests needed to confirm if your laptop has software or hardware issues.
Please keep in mind that this thread will no longer be monitored by Intel.
Regards,
Deivid A.

Did you ever figure out how to fix the issue? I"m having the exact same problem with my Thinkpad Carbon X1 (8th gen) and it seems like it started happening around when updating to 22h2 maybe a little before(?). Anyways, I tried updating to Win 11 hoping that it would fix the issue and instead it made it worse. Lost all of my old drivers and then almost nothing would install on my computer without the screen shutting off (even linux wise) until I installed Fedora 39 which actually fixed everything. I've had it for a few months now and decided to try out Win 11 again to see if it would work and it does... for a little bit at least, right after installation due to skipping the connecting to wifi and signing in (which I guess is running off of microsoft basic driver) but then as soon as I connect to the internet after finishing the installation the updates start rolling in and then the screen shuts off. I'm able to use an external monitor but the computer screen is still black. So I switched to Win 10 22h2 yet still having the same issue. Do you know how to keep it on the microsoft basic driver instead of it automatically updating when connect to internet or restarting? The reason I ask is because I will go and uninstall/delete the "Intell(R) UHD Graphics 620" driver and restart the laptop and it works for a little bit but then the update kicks in after awhile and it shuts off. Is there a way to prevent the driver from updating until this whole graphics driver issue is fixed?
ps- also is there a place online where you can download older version of the "Intell(R) UHD Graphics 620" driver that you know of? I'm thinking that may work because I used to have 3 or 4 versions I could roll back to that would work just fine but unfortunately I lost them after clearing my entire drive.

I had the same exact issue yesterday, i.e. Microsoft basic driver works, Intel UHD driver doesn't.
After going through all the usual suggestions I came across an unrelated post but it did explain how to get the previous drivers by editing the final number in the URL for the most recent driver which is available from the driver update page on Lenovo's support page for your model of laptop.
So for me I required the "Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 11 (Version 21H2 or later), 10 (Version 1709 or Later) - ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH, 20KG)"
The URL for the latest version of this this can be found by right-clicking the download button and "selecting copy link address", see attached image) and is:
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt25w.exe
Previous versions include
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt19w.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt20w.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt21w.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt23w.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt24w.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n23dt25w.exe
The 19 version worked for me, so I didn't bother trying the later ones.
