Both the game and Discord are experiencing performance lag when streaming a game to Discord?

I'm trying to stream Fortnite or Lost Judgment on Discord to my friends, but both my Discord and the game, even the whole system, are lagging, resulting in a lot of stuttering as well. I think it could be because Discord is using the Opus codec, and I do use 1080p at 30fps. Has anyone found a fix for this?

1. **Graphics Driver Details**:
- Intel Graphics Driver Version: 32.0.101.6262

2. **Applications Used**:
- Discord for voice chat and streaming.
- Fortnite (Epic Games version)
- Lost Judgement (from Steam version)

3. **System Information**:
- Processor: Ryzen 7 5700X
- Motherboard: MSI B550M Pro VDH Wifi
- RAM Amount: 32GB (2x16GB)
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4751)
- PSU: Cooler Master MWE 750W V3 Bronze

4. **Reproduction Steps**:
- Open Discord and ensure it is up-to-date.
- Launch either Fortnite or Lost Judgement through their respective platforms.
- Join a voice channel in Discord to stream the game with friends.
- Experience lag during gameplay.

Hi DuskyRick,

To help resolve this, I recommend turning off GPU acceleration in the Discord application. Below are the steps to do so, along with an explanation of the effects and reasons for this change.

Step-by-Step Guide to Turn Off GPU Acceleration in Discord

  • Open Discord:
    • Launch the Discord application on your computer.
  • Access User Settings:
    • Click on the gear icon located at the bottom left corner of the Discord window, next to your username. This will open the User Settings menu.
  • Navigate to Advanced Settings:
    • In the User Settings menu, scroll down and click on the "Advanced" option under the "App Settings" section.
  • Disable Hardware Acceleration:
    • In the Advanced settings, you will see an option labeled "Hardware Acceleration." Toggle the switch to the off position to disable GPU acceleration.
  • Restart Discord:
    • After disabling Hardware Acceleration, you will need to restart the Discord application for the changes to take effect. Click "Okay" when prompted to restart.

Disabling GPU acceleration may result in a slight decrease in performance, particularly in rendering animations and transitions within the Discord application. This is because the application will rely more on the CPU rather than the GPU for these tasks. By turning off GPU acceleration, the GPU will have more available resources for other tasks, which can be beneficial if you are running multiple GPU-intensive applications simultaneously. Additionally, GPU acceleration can sometimes cause instability in applications, especially if there are compatibility issues with the graphics driver or if the GPU is under heavy load. Disabling this feature can help improve the stability of Discord, reducing the likelihood of crashes while streaming. lastly, If Discord is crashing while streaming, it could be due to conflicts between the GPU acceleration and other processes or applications running on your system. Disabling GPU acceleration is a common troubleshooting step to isolate and resolve such issues.

If the issue persists, please let us know so we can further investigate other potential causes.

Hi DuskyRick,

I want to know more about the issue you are experiencing. Could you please provide answer to my questions?

  1. What is the exact make and model of your GPU?
  2. Are you using the desktop application or a web browser to launch Discord?
  3. Are the issues only seen on Discord, or do you observe similar issues in other applications?
  4. If the issue is only happening with the desktop application, have you tried reaching out to Discord technical support?
  5. When did the issue first occur? Has this been happening before?
  6. Have there been any recent software or hardware changes made to your system?
  7. How did you perform the last update? Did you use a device manager-clean installation or Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) before updating to the latest graphics driver?

Providing this information will help me diagnose the system more accurately and check for available solutions. Thank you for your cooperation, and I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

1. My GPU is an Intel Arc B580 12GB Gunnir Index.
2. I'm using the desktop application of Discord.
3. I just noticed that when I'm using anything that is recording, like OBS Studio, my game lags as well.
4. I have not yet asked Discord because the streaming worked fine on my laptop, which has an NVIDIA GTX 1650 TI mobile and Ryzen 5 4600H.
5. It first occurred when I tried streaming yesterday on Discord.
6. Nothing that I know so far.
7. I haven't tried using DDU, but I only used it when cleaning NVIDIA and AMD drivers back when I installed the Intel Arc drivers after I built my computer. After that, I updated my Intel Arc drivers through Intel Graphics Software.

Hi DuskyRick,

You may try running Discord when not in admin mode. Intel is currently investigating this issue.  Notably, this issue does not arise when using Discord's web version in a browser; it is isolated to the desktop application. If the issue persists, kindly try to contact Discord's technical support because the issue is only happening when using the desktop application

Best regards,

Hello again!

There seems to be an issue with using the Lossless Scaling application as well, as stated in this Reddit post.

Someone even left a comment on that post about capturing frames.

I was wondering if this might be connected to the streaming problem on Discord. They mentioned that the Intel Alchemist cards don’t have this issue, but the B580 does.

I hope this new information helps with looking into the issue. Thank you, and best of luck!

Hi there!

I did some testing with Fortnite, and I noticed that there was some stuttering at first, but it cleared up after a few seconds of streaming on Discord. I plan to try out some other game modes and different games to see how it goes. Thanks again for your support.
